Our Union have never won a playoff game since inception in 2010. Also, our Union have never won a major trophy since inception in 2010. If given a choice of only 1 of these two options in 2018, what would your prefer? For the purpose of this poll question, I am going to specify the alternative to the Open Cup trophy as a HOME playoff win at Talen Energy Stadium. I look forward to an opportunity to celebrate a playoff win at a chilly TES this fall. But even though I am not able to make the trip to Houston for the Open Cup game later this month, I would like to have the Open Cup in the Trophy case. Your thoughts?
Given that the Union likely will finish 5th or 6th, a "home playoff win" means that they win the first round matchup AND then the first leg of the Eastern Conference semis. That would put them in a great position to get to the Eastern Conference finals. I really want to win the Cup though.
When your a fan of certain teams, you take what you can get. As an NCFC fan, I look to the League & FA Cup runs for my excitement. For the Union, I'll take the USOC over a singular post-season win.
Don't forget there is cash money available for winning the USOC. $300,000 to the winner and $100,000 to the runner up. That's the main reason why the Union want to win so badly.
Is this extra $300K of GAM is specifically for winning the USOC and in addition to the bonus GAM that CCL qualifying teams get, or is it just the same bonus GAM that all the CCL teams get?
Guys, Winning the cup gets us into the Champions League. The US is the only country that doesn't see this as the top of everything. Winning the Champions league is 10x better than winning the MLS cup. Teams like PSG, Juve, Barca, Real Madrid put little stock in league wins. They work everyday to win their regional Champions League. Until this view changes the Open cup and the Champions League will continue to be streams on the interwebs instead of live national TV broadcasts they should be.
That's because their regional Champions League features teams like PSG, Juve, Barca, Real Madrid, and a host of other teams that most everyone in the world can name from memory. It's a Championship that holds a vastly higher meaning than the CCL, which features teams that Union fans see multiple times a year, surrounded by even more teams they may, or may not, have ever heard of. I know we all want the CCL to mean more than it does, but it's just not going to happen.
Why not? The Mexican teams are better, the MLS teams are similar and the teams from other countries generally are worse.
The winning team gets $300K American dollars in prize money. If the Union are fortunate enough to win the USOC, in 2019 MLS will give them extra Garber Bucks to help in their quest for CONCACAF Glory.
Oh I c Oh I cant disagree with you. I also think its what is holding soccer in this country back. Some of the teams in CCL like Americas and Azul and one or two of the Costa Rican teams are very good and have some top players.
I can’t see the FO doing a good enough job to make sure the team is ready for that type of tournament. They’ll end up spending the extra money in places we don’t need and we’ll look god awful.
Well, it doesn't seem like there was much of a debate. When was the last time that the Big Soccer Union fan base was unanimous on anything? While I "Covet the Cup" (tm), I actually would prefer to take a pass on the CCL. The additional games could really take a toll on our depth. I look at Toronto this year and think what it would mean to the Union.
