Marañon, Nazari propel Ceres to stunner over Brisbane Roar
Ceres will face Tianjin Quanjian FC in the preliminary round 3 of the AFC Champions League

Ceres Negros FC upsets Brisbane Roar, 3-2, on Tuesday, January 23 at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Center in Brisbane, Australia.

The win sends Ceres to a play-off with Tianjin Quanjian FC on Tuesday, January 30 in Tianjin, China. The winner of the final play-off will compete under Group E of the AFC Champions League group stage.

In the 35th minute, Brett Holman's cross found Massimo Maccarone who opened the scoring of the game. Six minutes later, Mitchell Oxborrow attempted to double the lead for Brisbane Roar, but his shot was blocked by Ceres.

Manuel Herrera's shot went off target in the 43rd minute, but his efforts provided the opportunity for Bienvenido Marañon to score the equalizer, 1-1.

In the 65th minute, Marañon capitalized on a pass from Mike Ott and scored his second goal of the game. 10 minutes later, the Australian defense failed to clear the ball which allowed Omid Nazari to convert the deflected ball towards the far post.

Eric Bautheac cut the deficit to one in the 86th minute as he sent the ball from Ivan Franjic towards the roof of the net. Brisbane Roar failed to level the score and extend game, surrending the game to Ceres-Negros.

In 2017, Global-Cebu FC faced Brisbane Roar in the second preliminary round of that year's AFC Champions League qualifiers, but lost 6-0 to the Australian club.

Nice fair comments from some of the Brisbane fans on social media. Ceres did not just come to Australia and park the bus. They came to play enterprising football.

    Ross Alistair
Your use of the word ‘Team’ is inappropriate for the Roar. At best we are a misfit/unfit collection of mostly old prima dona has-beens. And the opposition were not ‘sub par’ in my opinion. Their energy teamwork and technical skill was much better than the Roar. My god, they are only just in their pre-season (remember Roar in pre season losing 5-1 against Victory - embarrassing). And they are playing away from home against a so called bigger club. Pretty impressive really and it was insulting for you to call them sub standard.

    Cathal Donnelly
Hardly a sub par team. Very good team technically and outplayed roar for almost all of the game

It’s Asian Champions League season and it was welcome back to the qualification stage for Brisbane Roar as they faced Filipino League Champions Ceres-Negros, competing in their first ever ACL campaign.

John Aloisi named his strongest side available with Brett Holman a welcome sight back into the starting line-up whilst Ceres who are still in pre-season, named a well travelled side who had varying levels of experience across Asia and Europe. They had done a lot of travel of late too, with their last qualifier in Myanmar going into extra-time before arriving in Australia via their home country.

In a first ever Roar professional fixture at the QSAC, it was Brisbane who found themselves largely on the backfoot in the opening stages. Ceres-Negros pressed high and played with significant calm for a side two weeks into their pre-season.

After Brisbane took the lead it was all Ceres-Negros who came back with three goals of their own, before a late consolation goal to Eric Bautheac meant the final score was 2-3.

    CERES-NEGROS

    Toni Doblas – 7

The journeyman shot-stopper didn’t have a lot to deal with but punched away a lot of attempts to keep the ball away from the box.

    Junior Munoz – 6.5

Stuck on the right and had a challenge in Fahid Ben Khalfallah. Held his own and was subbed late in the game.

    Manuel ‘Super’ Herrera – 7

Key interception to stop a wicked cross from Franjic. Headed down to Maranon who finished the job from a late first half corner. Got involved in a fracas with Franjic but overall had a great game.

    Carlos de Murga – 7.5

The Captain led by example and stopped many a Brisbane attack. He was strong, confident and assured.

    Jeffrey Christiaens – 6

The left back provided Mike Ott with plenty of ball and as the game went on he got further forward to join in attack.

    Kevin Ingreso – 7

Started with a strong challenge that went unpunished. Later delivered the corner that sealed the win for his side after Omid Nazari banged it in for their third.

    Mike Ott – 7.5

The diminutive midfielder troubled the Roar defence and eventually laid off a lovely inside ball to Maranon to put the visitors ahead.

    Stephan Schrock – 8.5

Broke down the right in good early runs and showed up some opposition defenders. Popped up on the left and put it on a plate for Nazari to tap in but he couldn’t get anything on it. A fantastic overall performance, would not be out of place in higher-reputation leagues.

    Bienvenido Maranon – 8.5

Golden boot in the league in the Philippines last season and got a lot of the ball in the early stages before it fell to him from a Super (the player) header. Made no mistake and put the ball over the line to draw his side level. His highlight though was the magnificent goal curled around Jamie Young and into the corner of the goal to put Ceres up 2-1. Subbed in the dying stages for a well earnt rest.

    OJ Porteria – 6.5

Pressed high and hard, forced a lot of mistakes from the opposition holding midfielders but didn’t get many chances on the ball.

    Omid Nazari – 7

Got free of the defence and should have tapped in after 17 minutes but he was unable to connect with Schrock’s through ball. Made up for it when he finished off a sloppy Roar clearance and booked his side a spot in the next round of qualifying versus Tianjin Quanjian.

Brought on with five minutes to go. Not enough time to give a fair score

    AFC Champions League
Ceres-Negros win brings much-needed joy for Filipino football

Paul Williams believes that – after some troubled times for football in Philippines – things are looking promising in the near future.

It’s been a tough few weeks for Filipino football.

After Ceres-Negros lifted the first-ever Philippines Football League title with a win over Global Cebu in December, the shine has well and truly come off the new league after two clubs were forced to close their doors as a result of being unable to find new investors for 2018.

The closing of Meralco Manila and Ilocos United has shone a spotlight on the structure of the PFL and cast doubts over its future, with just six clubs slated to start the 2018 season.

“I expected FC Meralco Manila to be one of the more financially and organisationally stable clubs in the country,” former Global owner Dan Palami tweeted earlier this month.

“So their foldup comes as a shock. But then again, from a purely business point of view, it’s a prudent decision considering the first season experience of all the clubs. If the second season is run the same way, it’s almost a guarantee that more clubs will opt out.

“The amount of resources that club owners allocate for their operations is staggering, the fans can help by spending money to watch games, buy merchandise, and even offer to sponsor. We need to support our clubs before it’s too late.”

Ceres-Negros coach Risto Vidakovic echoed those thoughts in an interview with FOX Sports Asia this week.

“I don’t know what the future holds but if they don’t change the format or the way that things are organised then maybe in a few years there will no longer be a professional league,” he said.

“The way that things are done now it’s not sustainable and they have to change a lot of things, especially the way the league is organised, as it’s not sustainable where you depend just on the owners and companies investing with nothing coming back because if these companies can no longer invest then they will leave.”

So it was with some trepidation that fans approached Ceres’ AFC Champions League playoff against Brisbane Roar. After all, they had only just returned for pre-season and had struggled to overcome Myanmar’s Shan United last week, winning on penalties after the match ended at one-all.

At this stage of the competition last year Brisbane had humbled Global 6-0, so it’s easy to understand why some fans may have feared the worst. Even Vidakovic acknowledged the magnitude of the task ahead of them.

“The issue we face is that we are not prepared as our league finished in December and now we are back here playing already in the Champions League but we will try to compete and do the best we can,” he said.

“We know though it will be very tough for us because this is a higher level and Brisbane have many top players, many with experience in Europe and they are much better prepared than us.”

But despite going down a goal midway through the first half, Ceres-Negros rallied, and in fine style, and pulled off one of the biggest upsets in AFC Champions League history, registering a 3-2 win that will go down in folklore at the club. A win that will be talked about for decades.

Ceres were not overawed by Brisbane and took the game to their more fancied opponents, looking to constantly play on the front foot with Stephan Schrock expertly controlling things in midfield, and Spanish striker Bienvenido Maranon adding some polish up front.

While they now face the daunting task of tackling China’s Tianjin Quanjian, just making it to the final playoff is massive achievement.

It’s a win that has provided Filipino football with a massive fillip, pardon the pun. Fans across the archipelago are waking today with a smile on their face, and that’s not something that has happened much of late.

With the national team on track to secure their first ever qualification for the AFC Asian Cup in March when they host Tajikistan, there is suddenly light at the end of the tunnel again for Filipino football.

"I couldn't even sleep last night," Ceres forward Marañón hails historic Brisbane Roar upset
    Wednesday, January 24, 2018

Brisbane: The 2017 PFL Top Scorer believes the Filipino side are reaping the rewards of years of hard work after stunning the A-League club 3-2 in Tuesday's AFC Champions League 2018 Preliminary Round 2 tie.

In one of the great Asian club football upsets of recent times, Ceres Negros - who only started as a club in 2012 - became the first team from the Philipines to reach the final stage of AFC Champions League qualifying after defeating Australia's Brisbane Roar 3-2 at Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre.

the-AFC.com caught up with two-goal hero Bienvenido Marañón to get his reaction on a special night for football in the Southeast Asian nation.

Q: Hello Bienvenido, firstly congratulations on the incredible result against Brisbane Roar: Ceres Negros are the first Filipino side into the AFC Champions League Play-offs! How are you feeling today, and has it sunk in what the team achieved yet?

I feel very happy, personally and for the team, because it's a reflection of the work this club has put in over these last few years. It's a team that keeps growing and has now put Ceres Negros in the forefront of ASEAN football.

It hasn't really sunk in yet what we have achieved. I couldn't even sleep last night after this historic occasion for us and Filipino football.

Q: In the build-up to the game, what was the mood like among the team? You had just had a tough game against Myanmar's Shan Utd and then a short rest before jetting off to Brisbane, and to face a team who had comprehensively beaten fellow Filipino club Global FC at the same stage last year.

Our preparations to play against Shan Utd and Brisbane Roar were the same. We knew that with just four days to prepare for the games including the travelling time they would be very hard games for us, especially Brisbane.

We went to enjoy the experience and didn't put ourselves under any undue pressure, that was the point. As a result, the atmosphere among the team was very relaxed and that was reflected on the pitch.

Q: Can you give us your impressions of the match against Brisbane - did you have any expectations?

Actually, yes, Brisbane played exactly as we expected, as our coach told us they would. They had the ball a lot, spread the play from one side to another, but they lacked penetration; that was also thanks to the great defensive work we put in.

We knew we could put them in trouble after recovering the ball and hitting them on the counterattack, and so it proved. I saw them as a good team but without attacking penetration, something we have in our side.

Q: Speaking of your attack, you scored a brace - can you describe your goals?

The first goal was part of a set-piece routine. I always drop back to the far post in case the ball breaks loose there and this time it did! I was lucky enough to control it well and, despite not a lot of space and time, get my shot in.

For the second, Mike [Ott] latched onto a long ball upfield and quickly played me in. I was able to get the ball under control and aimed for the far corner where the goalkeeper couldn't reach.

Q: Were these the most important goals of your career?

They were definitely among the most important, I've had the good fortune to score in other important games, too. But, it's true that for the context, the place, the moment, and the teams involved, maybe they were the most important.

Q: On the back of this result, how do you feel about the big AFC Champions League Play-off tie next week in China?

Our confidence is absolutely sky-high right now, so now we're going to enjoy this victory for the moment. We will be realistic about the big challenge coming up and prepare ourselves in the same way as we have for the games in Myanmar and Australia - enjoy the experience and the games!

    ACL Preview

    Tianjin Quanjian vs Ceres-Negros

    3:30pm, January 30

    Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium, Tianjin

    TIANJIN QUANJIAN

Having only earned promotion from China League One at the end of 2016, few expected Tianjin Quanjian to make the impact they did in 2017, finishing third in their first season in the Chinese Super League.

With Alexandre Pato, Anthony Modeste and Axel Witsel, they possess a potent attacking line up that is complemented by Chinese internationals Wang Yongpo, Yang Xu and Sun Ke. Importantly, the squad remains largely the same as 2017, so they will be hoping to pick up where they left off.

While Fabio Cannavaro, who led the team to promotion and their success last season, has since departed, former Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa is a more than capable replacement as he targets even loftier goals this season.

    CERES-NEGROS

Few people expected Ceres-Negros to make it this far, especially after they struggled past Myanmar champions Shan United in the first preliminary round.

But their win over Australia’s Brisbane Roar will go down in the history books and be spoken about at the club for decades to come. Far from a plucky, defensive, backs-to-the-wall performance, Ceres-Negros took the game to Brisbane Roar and fully deserved their win. Importantly, after conceding the first goal they didn’t panic, and they were rewarded with a deserved equaliser just before half time.

Maranon, who was a star for Ceres-Negros in their AFC Cup campaign last year, showed his predatory instincts with two quality goals either side of half time, while Stephan Schröck produced another masterful display in midfield, highlighting just how important the German-born midfielder is to this team.

    AFC Champions League
Ceres-Negros ACL decider in jeopardy over visa issue

Scott McIntyre investigates how Ceres-Negros’ quest to qualify for the AFC Champions League could now be out of their control.

Just days after their stunning AFC Champions League qualification victory over Brisbane Roar, Ceres-Negros’ hopes of reaching the group stage hang by a thread as they remain stuck in limbo in the Philippines – unable to obtain the visas they need to travel to China for Tuesday’s final qualifier.

The club has claimed that they’ve appealed to various bodies for help but with none forthcoming, they’ve called upon the AFC to postpone the match against Tianjin Quanjian to ensure that it’s played on an ‘equal’ level.

Having applied for the necessary travel documents at the Chinese embassy in Manila immediately upon their return from Australia they were informed that there wasn’t enough time to process them before the weekend, meaning that the earliest they can secure the visas would be on Monday.

Even if they are processed by then – and the club is not confident that will happen – it means the Ceres squad would need to catch an overnight flight to China, go without sleep or a training session and then play the biggest match in their – and their nation’s – history that same afternoon.

Speaking exclusively with FOX Sports Asia, Ceres coach Risto Vidakovic, termed the situation ‘crazy.’

“I think there’s not enough time – it was a ten hour trip from Australia back to the Philippines and when we arrived it was already Friday,” said Vidakovic.

“The Chinese embassy told us that they needed all the passports to process the visas and that, because it was Friday, they said they didn’t have enough time to give us the visas until after the weekend.

“That means if we get those visas on Monday we then must travel overnight and we will arrive on the matchday and without sleeping or anything and we have to go and play the game.

“This is a bad condition and difficult to compete so it’s a big problem how to organise everything to get there on time and play the game.”

With a best-case situation seeing Ceres arrive in the arctic conditions of Tianjin on Tuesday morning that would give them perhaps as little as seven or eight hours before kickoff.

Vidakovic called that ‘suicide’ for his team and implored the AFC to delay the game so that both clubs can compete on a more even footing – bearing in mind the extensive travel that the lower-ranked team already has to endure just to get to this stage.

He added: “Of course we need more time and they have to understand that we came from another continent and then going to China we have less than one week to prepare visas and prepare everything.

“We also need to think that we have to prepare the right equipment for this kind of match, it’s minus-11 there in China and in the Philippines it’s 35 degrees and everything is different so we need more time to compete in the same conditions as them and that’s only fair.”

“We’ve tried to contact many people, including in the government here, to get the visas, but there’s no possibility and the problem now is we need to try and postpone the game.

“Only the AFC or the ACL organisers can help us and the only possibility to compete in the same, fair, conditions is to move the game one or two days later.”

However, on Sunday evening, an AFC spokesperson responding the queries by FOX Sports Asia clarified that the onus was on the club to ensure all proper documentation was in order.

“Based on provisions of the ACL Regulations and Competition Operations Manual, each Club (and its Member Association), at their own expense, are solely responsible throughout the Competition for obtaining visas to enter the territory of a Host Association,” said the statement from the AFC.

“Each Club must apply for all necessary visas for their Team Official Delegation no later than thirty (30) days prior to each match played outside its territory. This obligation includes potential away Matches, taking into account successful qualification for a further stage of a Competition.”

“Ceres did not apply for a visa ahead of their AFC Preliminary stage game in Brisbane. Since the issue was recognised on Wednesday morning, AFC has worked tirelessly with the Chinese Football Association to ensure visas are available as soon as possible so the match can go ahead as scheduled.”

This story now runs the very real risk of overshadowing the historic 3-2 victory in Brisbane earlier in the week where Vidakovic noted that he felt the A-League club had ‘underestimated’ his side.

“In football nothing is impossible – it was very difficult of course because nobody believed, even us, and we thought that we were just enjoying this competition without good preparation because it’s very difficult to compete with clubs at a high level that are already in their season,” explained the Serb.

“It was a surprise for everyone but if I look back and watch the game again I can say we deserved the win.

“We gave them problems with the transitions and we defended well and counter-attacked fast and that gave us the advantage in a match where the intensity wasn’t so high.

“We thought they would push more early in the second half but they’d didn’t do that and our defence was very good at that point and I think it was normal that they underestimated us before the match, that’s normal and it’s not easy to motivate your players when you play smaller clubs and before the game everyone expects you to score a lot of goals with a relaxed atmosphere.”

Should the game go ahead as scheduled, the winner will then join Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Kitchee and the winner of the Kashiwa Reysol-Muangthong United playoff to complete Group E.

If the AFC does not postpone this match, Ceres will arrive on matchday and will have only a few hours rest before the start of the match which will be held in subzero temperatures, which they have no time to adjust to.

After reading the article...its the clubs front offices fault so AFC doesn't need to do anything. I bet next year they don't make the same mistake again.

Yeah I thought it was the team coordinator's fault. It was his responsibility to read the AFC rules and prepare accordingly.

    FT Tianjin 2-0 Ceres

Good effort by Ceres despite the trying circumstances, the stronger opponent and the disparity in experience and payscale. The score is respectable at this level. Same score that Cardiff City and Neil Etheridge gave up against Manchester City(currently leading the Premiership) in the English FA Cup.

The match went through as scheduled and Ceres had to make do with the short rest.

Play-off: Tianjin Quanjian FC 2-0 Ceres Negros FC

    Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Tianjin: A brace from Frenchman Anthony Modeste saw China’s Tianjin Quanjian secure a 2-0 win over a stubborn Ceres Negros of the Philippines to secure their place in the group stage of the 2018 AFC Champions League.

The Filipino club started the brighter at Tianjin Olympic Sports Center Stadium and had the best chance of the early exchanges when Stephan Schrock’s volley was well saved by Zhang Lu.

But against the run of play it was the home side who took the lead after 18 minutes. Axel Witsel’s shot from the edge of the box could only be palmed out for a corner, from which Modeste towered above the Ceres defence to smash home a powerful header.

All three of Tianjin Quanjian’s international stars were involved in their second, with Witsel’s header in midfield finding Alexandre Pato who expertly cushioned the ball over the top of the Ceres-Negros defence to play in Modeste, who made no mistake with just goalkeeper Toni Doblas to beat.

The win for Tianjin Quanjian sees them join Hong Kong’s Kitchee, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors of Korea Republic and the winners of Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol and Thailand’s Muangthong United in Group E, with their first match at home to Kitchee in two weeks.

A potential player for the Azkals is FSV Mainz 05's Gerritt Holtmann(22 y/o) who plays in the Bundesliga and is playing tonight against Bayern Munich. He has already scored 2 goals for Mainz in the Bundesliga.

He has been contacted by the Azkals but has yet to commit. He has however added the Philippine flag along with the German one, to his social media accounts.

He played 5 games for the German U 20 national team back in 2015.
