Not to throw shade on any of the normal guys that cover the Union, but Smallwood's word definitely carries more weight outside of the soccer bubble.
Biggest market; lowest ROR.... Kevin also said he sees no change next 2 years.Jason said: 'how about JackMac scoring a goal against the Union this weekend ...' All very negative.
https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2017/may/01/philadelphia-union-mls-winless-streak "In today’s MLS — where tireless fullbacks like Seattle’s Joevin Jones and Toronto’s Steven Beitashour overload the wings to create consistent offensive mismatches — Curtin’s teams can look outdated and underpowered, set out to fail from the first whistle. It doesn’t help that their two big summer signings, Haris Medunjanin and Jay Simpson, both look overwhelmed by physical nature of the MLS, out of breath and out of ideas." Well, now I'm depressed.
I'm tired of the old "MLS is a physical league" cliché, though. I've never seen a friendly between an MLS team and a foreign one in which the MLSers didn't look like scrawny weaklings. The Union have just signed a lot of players over the years who don't have the physical tools to play the game.
I often read it not just as physical in the hard-hitting sense, but physical in that physical attributes > technical ability. In that sense, I think it very much holds up (though improvement in this regard has been quite clear over the years).
Yeah, I hear physical league as damning praise. Like possession receiver = slow white guy in the NFL. It's very physical because most Euros/SA coming in have more technical abilities in their dirty laundry than half the club they're joining. Even a broken down Paunovic coming here pulled out moments of magic that none of the kids at the time could dream of. Marfan could try 100 free kicks from where Kleberson hit that beauty and never come close. Danny Cruz? Physical as hell.
Union Interns: "Don't worry, Mr. Sugarman, we can distract from our epic suckatude with this DOPE Fresh Prince parody! Another one in the win column! We're winning off the field!" https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/post/2017/05/05/fresh-prince-chest-air?autoplay=true
couldn't make it down in time on Saturday so I watched at home. saw the pre game show for the first time. wow...I've seen high school news broadcasts with more professionalism than this. The woman who hosts actually uttered the phrase "kinda, sorta, probably a little". She also pronounced Bimbo like the derogatory term, not BEEM-bo. well done
yeah, I'm not going to be negative about that one.... if it was something about being unbeaten I'll take issue.
