seems like a waste.. feel like it could come back and bite us in the ass, but the reality is the Union didn't like him, didn't have plans for him, and didn't want to use him, so it's a good thing they got something back for him.
Young, athletic player with MLS experience for some dunny money for an expansion team. Get him in this year as part of a core. Seems like a reasonable deal for Nashville. As for the Union it seems like they had a fair amount of time to evaluate him. Obviously thought he had potential but didn't pan out and Ernst seems like a pretty fair judge of talent so far. Get a little something for the trade but tack on the sell on clause in case a change of environment makes a big difference in his growth. For me, seems like a good call for the Union.
So I wonder what Ernst is going to do with that $1.25 mil in cap space he just cleared up. And let's not forget the $600k in Garber Bucks. And all with players that are depth pieces at best.

It's not crazy to think they might pay that kind of money. It's not a ton in the current environment, and Sugarman has shown signs that he's willing to invest more in the club (Fabian, Santos, the initial and current Monteiro payments). I wouldn't bet on it, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.
Seems like his salary and desire to stay in MLS are bigger hurdles than the transfer fee. Metz just got promoted, so if he didn't fit their lineup in Ligue 2, can't see him doing in in Ligue 1. Hopefully they are aware of the sunk cost fallacy.
On the potentially positive side, it's pretty easy to point towards his production here to convince Sugarman to sign him. Not that he will actually splash the cash.

Although it sucks to fall in love over and over again with players who are going to take off again (Barnetta, Nogs, Valdes 1.0, Dockal, Monteiro, etc, etc, etc)
This, unfortunately, is the reality of sports fandom in the 21st century. Guys like Derek Jeter and Steve Gerrard who spend their entire careers with one team are going to become a relic of a bygone era.
Uh huh? The two you listed are generational icons, and the guys who play for the Union have obviously jumped around because their quality fits the Union level, hence journeymen, loans, and cheap 'steals' who didn't fit in at their old place. We can't afford great, so we get good players who travel the world trying to restart/jumpstart their flawed career. It's not a sign of the times, it's the sign of an relatively average 10 year old team in a 25 year old league. Off-topic, but baseball free agency is dying. Expect to see a lot more players staying with one team their whole career.
Point taken. I just listed the two first guys that popped into my head who were loved by their fans and that stayed with one team their entire career. I meant that sports fans in general should probably give up on the idea that their favorite players will be with their club their whole careers, regardless of whether they're fans of 'have' teams like Manchester United/New York Yankees, or 'have nots' like the Oakland A's/Philadelphia Union.
