Philadelphia Union have announced that they have signed goalkeeper Jake McGuire after selecting him off of waivers. Originally selected by the Houston Dynamo in the Second Round (30th overall) of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, McGuire becomes the third goalkeeper on the Union’s roster. “We were eager to take a look at Jake in training when we found out that he had become available, and we are excited to bring him aboard officially,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart. “Jake is a tall, athletic goalkeeper who excelled in college with Tulsa. Mostly we're just glad he has a heartbeat, cause as we say about McCarthy, he's just one heartbeat from being our starter, and ain't nobody wants that shiz to happen.” McGuire, 22, played for four seasons at Tulsa, where he was named to the NSCAA Third-Team All-East Region and the American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team during his senior season. In total, he appeared in 67 games for the Golden Hurricane, tallying 17 shutouts. Previously, McGuire spent time in the U.S. Youth National Team U-17 Residency Program and also was a member of the Chivas USA Academy. While with Houston during the 2017 preseason, McGuire started a scrimmage against the Colorado Rapids (February 25), helping keep a clean sheet over 65 minutes of play. He also appeared in a friendly for Rio Grande Valley FC against the Dynamo in an intra-squad scrimmage (February 7), which compared to Local Helmet is just enough experience for Jim to stop reaching for the Xanax while watching John warming up.
John McCarthy is back in Bethlehem and starting between the posts. He's Steel FC's winningest keeper in the club's young history. #BSTvORL pic.twitter.com/KSKlIMMZ1Z— Philadelphia Union II (@PhilaUnionII) April 23, 2017 He is a good USL player. That's about the best thing I have to say about him
Josh Yaro apparently has gotten his Green card. https://www.brotherlygame.com/2017/6/15/15806506/philadelphia-union-josh-yaro-gets-his-green-card
Not sure where to put this (no Union-NYRB thread yet), but Herbers, Creavalle and Bedoya out for Sunday's game. Looks like it will be: Sapong Pontius-Ilsinho-Fafa Medunjanin-Jones Fabinho-Elliott-Gooch-Gaddis Blake I guess it's possible that Marquez, Yaro or Rosenberry could play but I doubt it.
Dunno, feels like they've been testing Yaro and Wijnaldum out lately. If Yaro's good to go, then he might bring Rosenberry with him into the lineup as his wingmate.
https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/post/2017/07/13/toyota-story-behind-josh-yaros-green-card Yaro and now Herbers get their green cards - the Union can bring in a foreign player to fill the open roster spot created by Ayuk's loan.
I feel like with the academy signings and the failings of signings at key positions, we no longer are in a 5-year plan, but a 10-year plan. Welcome aboard, everyone!
No match thread up for the Columbus game yet. Alberg suspended. Gaddis, Picault, Sapong, Herbers, Jones injured. Blake and Pontius on international duty. Doesn't look good.
So...typical Union game? One win in 9 road games for the Union facing a team with no missing players and Meram with an ax to grind after being snubbed as an All-Star choice. Could be ugly. Then again it's Petrescu in the middle so who knows what might happen.
Assuming none of the injured guys play: Simpson Ilsinho-Najem-Epps Medunjanin-Bedoya Wijnaldum-Onyewu-Elliott-Rosenberry McCarthy
So...how many more losses until the posidelphians join us on the good ship "LostSeason"? They needed 6+ points from this @MTL @CMB CMB stretch to just keep pace. Let's say they split the home and home. That's 26 points in 21 matches. If their 1.8 home and 0.75 road PPG form holds (and have you seen evidence it won't?), that's 16 points left. So they're tracking to 42 (again though 538 has them to 43) and outside the playoffs by 4-6 points. I guess you can walk around saying they're close, but is it belief or delusion?
One cannot make the claim that they are "close" when they were a payoff team in the previous season and probably not in the following year. That's called going backwards and getting farther removed from stated goals. Despite what the font office brass said about their off-season signings, it is clear they did not replenish the talent losses of the previous season with equal talent. It's the same complaint every year: the Union do not do enough personnel-wise to genuinely compete for MLS cups.
The ol' merry-go-round of criticism: coaches, players, scouting, parking lot. All of these things go back to one person who has been here since day 1:
