Wouldn't players jump on redshirting? They get an extra year of college and money, right?

Of course, but they just now released the new crest for the women's soccer program with their first N.C. star on it. I use it as my avatar now.

This video contains content that is unacceptable ( a small video clip of Jerry Sandusky was inserted). Can someone delete the whole video? This is unfortunate that someone feels like they need to make a statement! It is at the 1:50 mark and has at the bottom, "LSUFreek".

I hadn't watched the video earlier. That was really distasteful.
@WWC_Movement can you delete that scene with Sandusky?
There's no reason this team's good name needs to be tarnished.

    To WWC Movement:

I would also like ask you to take down this video that you have posted.

And I would like to address you directly and plainly say that I do not know of any decent soccer fan who appreciates the immature sense of humor that caused that Sandusky clip to be inserted into the PSU women's soccer video or the political smear at the end. PSU fans deserve to enjoy their team's victory without such chicanery.

If you are indeed the previously banned WPS Movement, I would like to respectfully ask you to honor the ban and stay off these boards. If you are not the former WPS Movement, please stop all inappropriate posts such as this one.

Very cool video minus the stupid, sophomoric insert.

You must have missed in the video description comments where it says:

It validates that PSU has officially persevered in terms of their athletics since the Sandusky dark cloud hung over their head. Penn State is now free again.

Penn State can now move on.

There was never any intent to mock Penn State.
It was only to prove they have rallied together and have carried Penn State's tradition forward as a true power.

The Penn State championship montage got a makeover, a complete mulligan.
No Jerry Sandusky in this one.

Soccer Reality - Twist Your Worst Nightmare // To Your Best Dream
The Penn State Women's Soccer program went through years of pain & suffering, lots of tragedy & torture, before they would finally live their Dream. Suffering defeats in the College Cup to the hands of legendary teams & players such as Christine Sinclair and Kealia Ohai, they needed to dream bigger. The 2015 team featured a stacked roster, as they would roll up their sleeves & DREAM, as they would attempt to twist previous nightmares in to fantasy.

Excellent additions but I wonder whether Freigang will be in the U20 World cup as well? Our defense is hurting with the keeper and back line out this season. Fisk will be a welcome addition to try and fill the hole

Amanda Dennis is a better keeper than Chandler. Dennis will be the starter going forward and Chandler not only is going to be on another U20 WWC losing side but she will be going into her 4th year at PSU only having played in 5 games. I will bet anything that she will be unable to beat out Dennis who is taller and similarly athletic (she will be one of the two keeper for the new U20 team for the next cycle that will be named in January).

Agree that Dennis is a better GK than Chandler. If not now, then she will be soon enough. Chandler will/could be an interesting case where she may never become a starter at PSU her entire career as someone who is a starting GK for the U20 WC team. It is shocking to be honest that she is the starting GK for the U20 group.

quick qestion...do u20s not go to class for the semester or whatever and do they get the eligibility back? Is the u20 thing "full-time"? Thank you.

"Redshirt" means they're normal students, with the usual class load (ahem ;)). They keep their scholarship (if applicable), train/practice/travel with the team (if physically able), and are entitled to use all facilities (esp. trainers and advisors). They may dress and sit on the bench. They just don't play.

In at least some college sports (esp. mfb), it's always an option for the coach to make an impulse decision and have a player "take off the redshirt" to win that one game (and be active for the rest of the season). I've seen this only with placekickers in mfb when he could win it with a long field goal, and the coach doesn't think any other kicker on the active roster can. Obviously, that uses up the full 1 year of eligibility, so it's rarely done, and rarely mutually beneficial. Most other NCAA sports do not have any one critical moment with similarly high incentive, so they almost never cancel redshirts halfway-through.

A redshirt year doesn't count as a year of their eligibility, so in a sense they get the eligibility "back" automatically. But their 5-yrs-to-play-4 clock still runs normally. Hence, all players can "freely" fit 1 redshirt into a 5-yr career (which is why it's so common), but it takes a petition to NCAA for an exceptional hardship waiver to earn a 6th year (and thus allow a 2nd redshirt). Some players get it for catastrophic injuries, e.g. 3 ACLs in 3 years might earn you a 6th year, if you even want it.

USA U-20 is very part-time. There will be maybe a couple of camps for <1 week each (say, 1 per month), and then the WWC-20 itself is about a 3-week chunk. That was still deemed to be too many interruptions to have players do both and stay in school.

I think the physical wear and tear on a player also has been a consideration.

For playing on a national team in a youth WC, isn't there also another year a player can add to her time in school?

You are allowed one-time up to one additional year on your clock for National Team duty, and you don't have to meet any progress towards degree requirements during that year. Section 14.2 deals with the five year rule:

( cut and paste of the manual PDF gives weird formatting, but you get the gist)

Yeah what do those national team coaches know about selecting goalkeepers?

Both Dennis and Chandler have been in U20 camp this cycle. If Dennis is clearly better why isn't she rostered instead?

Somebody previously corrected me on this - I don't believe that YNT duty is covered under that bonus year provision.

14.2 Is in reference to academic progress not the five year rule.

The five year rule is 12.8.1
12.8.1 Five-Year Rule. A student-athlete shall complete his or her seasons of participation within five calendar years from the beginning of the semester or quarter in which the student-athlete first registered for a minimum full-time program of studies in a collegiate institution, with time spent in the armed services, on official religious missions or with recognized foreign aid services of the U.S. government being excepted. For international students, service in the armed forces or on an official religious mission of the student’s home country is considered equivalent to such service in the United States. (Revised: 4/2/10, 7/31/14)

    ....

12.8.3.2.1.1 Exception—National/International Competition. For a maximum of one year after a prospective student-athlete’s first opportunity to enroll full time in a collegiate institution following the one-year time period after his or her high school graduation date or the graduation date of his or her class, whichever occurs earlier, participation in the following organized national/international competition is exempt from application of Bylaw 12.8.3.2.1: (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11; applicable to student-athletes who initially enroll full time in a collegiate institution on or after 8/1/11, Revised: 1/14/12, 7/31/14)
    (a) Official Olympic Games, Pan American Games, World Championships, World Cup, World University Games and World University Championships competition;
    (b) Officially recognized competition from which participants may directly qualify for final tryouts for a national team that will participate in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, World Championships, World Cup, World University Games or World University Championships and final tryout competition from which participants are selected for such teams; or
    (c) Official competition involving a national team sponsored by the appropriate national governing body of the U.S. Olympic Committee (or, for student-athletes representing another nation, the equivalent organization of that nation).

12.8.3.2.1.1.1 Junior Level Competition. The national/international competition exception does not apply to junior level national/international competition (e.g., Youth Olympic Games, U20 World Cup, Junior National Teams) that may be associated with the events specified in Bylaw 12.8.3.2.1.1. (Adopted: 8/11/11, Revised: 7/31/14)

True, but there is also a potential downside: someone else plays your position for an entire year, and if they do well, you'll have problems getting it back.
