Santos was among our best players vs TFC. Pipa & Abubakar at the top. Santos, Valenzuela, Trapp, Zardes, & Artur next.
Pedro “the new number 9” Santos needs to net a few goals today. As all of you know, Markus is still torn up about Justin Meram’s departure from Crew. Last week, he noticed a new number 9 who was not JM. Kids at his age may not be able to read or spell, but they know their numbers. They hold onto that wondrous knowledge of recognizing numbers. He knows everyone by number and name. Mister new number nine needs to show up and do justice to that number.
Welp, even dweebs like Matt Doyle over at the Major League Soccer Soccer Dot Com are coming around to points that I've been making here for several months now. The (lack of) production we are getting out of Santos is not DP worthy.... While I think they'll be ok in the long run, it's probably fair to start asking questions of DP winger Pedro Santos. His movement and vision are fantastic, but he's managed just 1g/3a in 1688 MLS minutes (regular season and playoffs) which is simply not good enough for a player with his role. Columbus need goals from their wingers or they'll drop down to the playoff line – and perhaps below it. On the bright side Andrew Erickson pointed out he's set to break the Crew's single season record for fouls suffered. He falls down a lot.
22 games. 1775 minutes. 1 goal, 4 assists. Pedro Santos is exactly the kind of DP you wind up getting when you have an owner the likes of Anthony Precourt.
Sucks seems a bit extreme. He's a slightly below average MLS starting winger that is being paid like an MLS best xi winger. I prefer "overpaid disappointment."
Pedro Santos is the highest Crew rated player on WhoScored.com. Winner. https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/1113
He's so ********in bad. He's the embodiment of the Precourt era of the Crew. So much hype, so little end product.
It seems to be one of those cases where he has tons of skill, but not the brains to use them effectively. Is it just that he's not able to integrate into the 3G style or mesh with his teammates or is he just permanently hindered by poor judgment? It still seems Pipa is more animated when Santos is around.
A glorious outing against the Fire this past Saturday. Pulling a hammy on the opening kickoff is some next level DP stuff. Just in time to sit out for our toughest stretch of the season so far.
The potential that having him sit out for 2 or 3 more games is a good thing is why we have this thread in the first place.
I think Grella is better than Santos but Martinez/Hansen are still raw. I would rather play two younger guys who can improve than an older DP who seems to be declining. Now, how do we fix Mensah?
The only thing I've been pleased about in general from Santos is his corner kicks. We haven't scored one I don't think, but he serves a pretty decent dead ball. Pipa hits the first defender too often for my liking. Santos is an improvement there. It's also nice to have someone on the bench who can make a difference. When Grella is on the bench we have that. We he starts and Santos is out, we have, Abu and Jahn? Argudo and the non-starting winger between Hansen and Martinez? Ugh.
I don't see much personally from Santos, but as Drag said above, my one thing with Santos is how much better Pipa seems to play with him on the field. I don't know if there's stuff to his game that we don't notice that helps give Pipa space, or what, but there seems to be something intangible there.
