Oh, and there are Portland (which is a Timbers-owned deal) and Sounders (don't know) and Vancouver (think so) U-23s. And if you want to get technical about it, Orlando City bought the Central Florida Kraze not long ago, so they have a PDL team, too.
Decent Open Cup run, they almost beat Charleston in which case my Earthquakes would have played them. Would've been funny!
I dont think so. They format it so that that cannot happen until the later rounds. I actually asked Dave Kaval (the president of the Earthquakes) what they would do if that happened, and he said that "they would make sure the first team won" Match Fixing! haha
PDL teams rarely make it far enough for that to happen, but in 2011 when Kitsap made the third round and played Seattle, Pumas coach Pete Fewing actually worked as a broadcaster for the Sounders. They try to keep reserves and affiliates from being put in that position whenever possible.
No idea, but I do remember that Ajax B (or jong Ajax) almost played the Cup Final against Ajax something like 10 seasons ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jong_Ajax
Please don't misunderstand, I know that Schulz did great stuff and had health issues (that ultimately led to his passing), and also that most likely led to a leaderhip vacuum of late. I'm just stating from a pure 'franchise' state its good that there will be a new vision now because South Florida definitely needs a solid program like that with new energy and vision that was not provided in the past couple years.
Philly Union has had a PDL club affiliate in Reading for a few years now and also have their USL Pro Affiliate in Harrisburg. The Union were among the first to form this type of minor league system
Portland u23 seattle u23 Vancouver u23 San Jose u23 montreal u23 Philadlephia affilate Reding United FC NASL Ottawa Fury U23 Possible future TFC Looking to make the Lynx their USL Pro Affiliate and could take the PDL slot as well to affiliate with Orlando City could be tied . There are still over 100 PDL teams in which both MLS and NASL sides could affiliate themselves with. MLS teams may choose to enter their U23 teams in the PDL or affiate themselves with a USL Pro and its PDL team as well. For the NASL affiliation could be the best way to go having their Academy players who have entered college and come back in the summer to play for the nearby affiliate. JMO.
Reserve teams in Spain play in the same league system as the senior team, rather than in a reserve team league. They must play at least one level below their main side, however, so Barcelona B is ineligible for promotion to La Liga and cannot play in the Copa del Rey
Update: TFC looks like it will have the Wilmington Hammerheads as its USL Pro affiliate for 2014 since the Lynx and Hamilton THF did not work out. Still would/could TFC affilate with the PDL Lynx. It appears they have dropped there u23 side, I could be wrong, and would need a place for academy players who have gone off to University to come back for the summer PDL season
You are right they do as well have a u23 in the PDL now. So they will probably stay. The USL side is not playing at the Citrus bowl this season as well. The have moved to the Disney World complex to a field with more seating put in. So I woner if they will continue to run their own USL Pro team out of there
They are now, but they used to be eligible. Real Madrid played their reserve team Castillo FC (later known as Real Madrid B and then Real Madrid Castillo) in the final of the Copa del Rey in 1980. Because Madrid won both the cup and the league, Castillo was awarded a place in the European Cup Winners Cup the next year.
Wouldn't that be funny if the Quakes and the Quakes u23 both qualified for CCL! haha Honestly to me the fact that the u23's are in Open Cup is the most exciting part, yah its almost impossible for a u23 team to win it, but hey, anything can happen!
