Couple of changes for Everton to start the 2nd half: Davies and Niasse came off for Schneid and Lennon. Rooney, presumably, will be pushed forward as they chase the game and try to go at Pool's defense which has been untroubled so far. Side note: I get the players are running around and keeping warm, but it still amazing to me all the number of them wearing short sleeves given the weather conditions, with the snow falling seemingly harder and harder.
Definitely a pk. That gets called 100% of the time in midfield. In the box, refs usually get cold feet, but definitely a foul.
Not sure what PNev is going on about: I get that he did make a habit of making dumb fouls in dangerous spots during his playing days, but no question that was a foul from Lovren on Calvert-Lewin and it was a justified call. Might have been against the run of play but Everton will gladly take it all the same.
Disagree. That was really soft. You could see on the replay that Lovren didn't even use force or extend his arms and CL launched himself in the air. He sold it well.
"Soft" is such a stupid word in this context. It was clearly a push in the back with the arm, which is a foul. The Laws don't distinguish types of fouls outside and inside the box. The problem is that too many fouls like that don't get called because they happen in the box. Referees don't want to "decide the outcome of a game" by calling certain fouls in the box, but by not calling fouls as fouls because the happen in the box they're still deciding the outcome of the game. Defenders don't get special license to commit fouls once play is in the box.
The more times I see the replay of the penalty, the clearer it is that it wasn't a penalty. Dumb by Lovren to get that tight but CL sold it.
Not sure what else could be expected from a attacking player in similar circumstances. The bottom line remains that Lovren put the ref in a position to make that call. Defenders know full well that especially when you are in the box, they have to be careful of what they do as the officials natural inclination is to favor attacking players. More so if there is any hint of wrongdoing from the defenders part. Lovren put his hand in Calvert-Lewin's back and that's the view he had of the action. From his perspective, it makes sense. And Calvert-Lewin can not be faulted for aking advantage and embellishing either.
I never said Lovren didn't put himself in a bad position. He did. I said it wasn't a foul, which it wasn't. Do you disagree?
The foul was arguably soft and CL fully took advantage of it. But there was contact, even if it was minimal. But it's still a foul on Lovren's part.
We obviously have different opinions on the matter and that's fine. Plus it's worth remembering that the ref had to make a decision on the spot (and can't review multiple times and from different angles as we do). Given Lovren's action of putting his hand on CL's back, I can't fault him at all and if nothing else, made it very easy for him to make that decision.
It's not just a "different opinion". You're spot on correct, Ashur, and you should resist the urge to agree to disagree in a situation where it's plain as day that a foul was committed. It happened to have been committed in the box, which is why some just don't get it. Forget what Ashur and I think -- after all, neither of us are Liverpool fans. Consider Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool legend: Jamie Carragher ✔@Carra23 Get back in the dressing Lovren 100% pen. 8:07 AM - Dec 10, 2017 100% pen indeed.
