I dunno how anyone can say Gonzo isn't a first choice starter...he's started both qualifiers under Bruce even with better options available. If this continues, it's gonna be a problem..
I'd rather start Zusi or MOF at RB than Gonzo at CB. Whenever we have all of our CB's healthy, we'll see what the pecking order is but I wont' be surprised if Gonzo is still starting, unfortunately.
Your first paragraph giveth and your second paragraph taketh away. The entire 2nd and 3rd paragraph diminishes the role of everything he did in the US where he spent 80% of his time. Yes all those US based games and practices he played against older kids had a huge impact on his development.
I like when they go to Jimmy in a bar that is like the least US-centric place to watch soccer in manhattan. He's 5 blocks away for AO/NYCFC/RB bars. Jimmy hasn't lived here long.
I expect coaches to occasionally play their best available players. Gonzo was garbage against Honduras, and yet, here we are. And Zusi, he doesn't even deserve to start at KC. He's absolutely pitiful.
I really hope Zusi scores tonight. "Hey, remember me? I'm the guy who ruined your World Cup hopes four years ago"
The best part of this thread are the comments about Bein pre-game. It's amazing. Kirovski and Bocanegra are actually good, the rest are making me laugh out loud often.
Jones, the BL veteran will be the least of CP's problems. On the contrary, I suspect Jones will like being able to link up with another player who can position himself optimally for outlet passes. In fact, I'll even go (very slightly) out on a limb and predict Jones with an assist for CP, or a secondary assist for a CP assist.
Besler is the best available CB. Why isn't he starting? Because Gonzo played so well last game that he deserved to be in there? Or Ream played so well in his ~15 minutes that he also had to start? Pick one or the other, not both.
I said a prayer to San Zusi but he answers prayers according to the eternal humiliation of Mexico, so we'll see.
These are deep thoughts. I feel for those folks who have been drinking all afternoon. I just started an hour ago and I had to reread this multiple times.
As far as the lineup goes, it's close to what I expected. I thought maybe Clint wouldn't start two games so close together as he's still getting back to 100 percent. Thought they would go with Altidore all alone with Pulisic behind him and Bedoya on the right. And I didn't know Cameron was injured. The rest I expected, including Jones starting.
I feel really good about Gonzo's turning ability against Panama. Really really good. Really good. Especially with the speed of Tom Ream behind him. Reeeeeaaaaly good.
