Courtesy of @MassachusettsRef, the referee for Panama-USA is Roberto García of Mexico, who has refereed for the USMNT several times before: USA 0-2 Colombia in the Copa América Centenario group stage, USA 1-1 Panama in the 2015 Gold Cup third-place match, USA 2-0 Panama in a 2013 WCQ, USA 1-0 Venezuela in a 2012 friendly, USA 1-1 Argentina in a 2011 friendly, and USA 0-0 Colombia in a 2010 friendly.
It is absurd that we have to have refs that are from competing nations ref the game. Refs should be taken from minnow nations that did not make the HEX. Remove any possibility of any thoughts of prejudice.
How many qualified CONCACAF referees from minnow nations are there for these bigger games? I assume most of Concacafs referees come from the top 6 in the hex. Its not like Asia where you just pick refs from countries in Group A for Group B
I will be at the match . . . https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attract...el_Fernandez-Panama_City_Panama_Province.html
Refs should be from UEFA. They'd actually call all the hard fouling and hacking the Central American countries do in World Cup qualifiers. I have very little confidence in Concacaf's referees.
The Panama squad has a lot of players from South American clubs. Wonder if they've become dribbling demons down there.
Relevant event to both those extolling the virtues of Mexican referees and those wishing for a referee other than Roberto García: @Fanison has drawn our attention to news from last Wednesday that César Ramos of Mexico will be the Panama-USA referee instead, apparently as an injury replacement. César Ramos has refereed for the USMNT several times before: Costa Rica 4-0 USA in a 2016 WCQ, Trinidad and Tobago 0-0 USA in a 2015 WCQ, and USA 2-1 Honduras in the 2015 Gold Cup group stage. He was the 2016 CONCACAF Male Referee of the Year.
I feel better with a Mexican ref. The Central American ones only pull a yellow when a bone is broken.
Per the US Soccer Honduras game preview ... "Three players are carrying yellow cards into these matches: Altidore, Bradley, and Brooks. Their next caution will result in a one-match suspension." {my emphasis} http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/201...-honduras-in-world-cup-qualifying-on-march-24
You know, I know he'd had some shaky results lately, but Jurgen Klinsmann looked like a whole new coach out there tonight.
I got this book on Amazon and read it. It was weird, just had the words "Juergen Klinsmann" over and over again for like 200 pages. Very convincing though.
A note of caution. Routing perhaps the weakest Honduras team in a dozen years at home does not foreordain success when traveling to perhaps the best-ever Panama team. Any draw in Panama would be a good result; any win in Panama would be a great result.
"There are two kinds of American soccer fan - those who realize that Klinsmann is a fraud, and those who will realize it one day.. " https://www.bigsoccer.com/blog/2015/7/23/62u6mqffolantsjw9qcd5i8rgu8gkt
