May 31, 2014 – Ottawa Fury FC vs FC Edmonton – Preview

It’s the NASL Canadian derby. It may not be El Clasico, but it’s our derby. It’s also fan appreciation night. It’s, as SMR calls it, Big Government vs. Big Oil. It’s chance for revenge for the loss at the the ACC/VCup/CanChamp, whatever hashtag you used for that tourney. It’s the last game at the godforsaken Keith Harris Stadium, though thanks has to go to Carleton for letting OSEG borrow the field. It’s going to be a good game, for sure, prepare to get loud!

Hopefully for the fall season when both clubs will be playing on pitches with no football lines that 360 will step back up and televise the game. Nationally. both clubs local broadecasters are Rogers owned networks So using the broacasts fromtheir local partner would cost Sportsnet really nothing.

NASL 2014 Matchday 9 at New York Preview

    June 6, 2014

June 8, 2014 – New York Cosmos vs Ottawa Fury FC – Preview

The Cosmos will be trying to sneak off with the Spring Season title at home against the Fury, as, according to NASL, “(the) Cosmos can claim the Spring Title with a win over Fury FC, but only if Minnesota lose to Tampa Bay and San Antonio lose/tie or win and do not turn around the goal differential deficit.” According to OFFC, “the New York Cosmos come into Sunday’s match unbeaten in their last 4 (3-1-0) where they have outscored their opposition 8-1,” while midfielder Marcos Senna is doubtful for Sunday’s match.

For the Fury, the morale of the club and the supporters are at a big high after that last minute snatch of a victory versus our Canadian rivals, and it would be great to finish off with a positive result to look forward to the summer break and to the Fall Season, with an eye out on the overall yearly table for the playoff spots. Omar Jarun has returned from his international duty, where he helped Palestine clinch the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup, though Nicki Paterson will once again sit out this game.

The players will go on a 1-week break after the match, according to Chris Hofley, and then will be back in Ottawa for training and, I’m sure, for some rowdy-ass World Cup viewing parties.

NASL 2014 Matchday 9 at New York Recap

    June 8, 2014 – New York Cosmos vs Ottawa Fury FC – 1-0 L

    Ottawa (4-2-3-1) – Gorrick 7; Maykon 6, Trafford 5, Beckie 5, Davies 6; Ryan (c) 6, Donatelli 6; Oliver 6, Dantas 6, Haworth 6; Heinemann 7

Subs – Elias (Dantas) 6, Mayard (Oliver) N/A, Jarun (Ryan) N/A

    Goal – N/A; Assist – N/A

An eventful NASL Spring Season comes to a close with a loss at New York, who looked dominant for the most part of the game, especially in the 1st half. Kudos to the Fury for coming out stronger in the 2nd half and pressing hard for the equalizer that nearly came.

Heinemann looked strong in all of his aerial challenges, which could be a crucial new component for Ottawa in the Fall Season, as we look to gain ground on the yearly table and into a top 4 spot. I will have a separate post that reviews and wraps up the Spring Season!

There hasn't been much news at all. They are back in training, at Algonquin instead of Carleton, and they might have played a game yesterday.

The Algonquin complex is a SSS complex so practicing there is probably better. I guess like many teams the play closed door games or scrimmages to keep sharp.
Their next game will be at TD place now anyway so they are done with Carleton.

This sounds like what happened/happens in the CSL with guys on phones reporting back to Europe betting houses on the games. Wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole.

NASL 2014 Matchday 10 at Edmonton Preview (and NASL Fall Season Preview)

    July 11, 2014

FC Edmonton vs Ottawa Fury FC – July 13, 2014 – Preview

The Fury FC have added a new keeper and a CB over the summer break, while two CMs have left the club. While there may still yet be some roster movement, the NASL Fall Season opener kicks off on Sunday right after the FIFA World Cup final, with an away derby against FC Edmonton.

The 1-0 injury-time victory over Edmonton in the last home game of the Spring Season is still very fresh in the minds of many Fury FC supporters, with Tom Heinemann making a fantastic comeback after his layoff from injury. He will be available for contention in the starting XI, though Nicki Paterson is still recovering from his spring season injury.

FC Edmonton went 3-0-0 in their friendlies during the summer, including a victory over the Seattle Sounders and a win against Victoria Highlanders FC of USL PDL. They have added Cristian Raudales, a CM, to their ranks over the past week.

A NASL Canadian derby right after the WC Final, it should be a good day of football on Sunday! Here are some match and fall season previews below, including one that I co-authored with Stuart Mactaggart on RedNation Online, where we will be contributing match previews and reviews throughout the fall season!

Also, be sure to check out the news from CSN on a huge development in the Canadian club soccer scene, with partnership between NASL, CFL and CSA. We may very well be looking at a “Canadian League” or a “Canada Conference” within the NASL in a couple years time!

Injuries and suspensions: M Nicki Paterson (doubtful), G Romuald Peiser (match fitness)

NASL 2014 Matchday 10 at Edmonton Review

    July 13, 2014 – FC Edmonton vs Ottawa Fury FC – 0-0 D – Review

    Ottawa (4-3-3) – Gorrick 7; Maykon 6, Trafford 6, Richter 4, Beckie 7; Ubiparipovic 7, Ryan (c) 7, Donatelli 6; Oliver 5, Heinemann 7, Davies 6

Subs – Jarun (Ubiparipovic) 6, Haworth (Oliver) 6, Dantas (Heinemann) N/A

    Goal – N/A; Assist – N/A; Red card – Richter

Injuries and suspensions: Paterson (injury, out), Peiser (match fitness, out)

Intro: Ottawa Fury FC hanged on for a hard-fought draw at FC Edmonton in extremely hot conditions, with the on-field weather reaching 40C. The Fury went down to 10 men after debutant CB Ryan Richter received his second yellow card at the 55′ mark for a grab on Eddies ST Frank Jonke.

Summary: The Fury were fortunate to hang on for the draw as the Eddies hit the bar twice in the last ten minutes, including a wonderful curler from the edge of the penalty area from winger Hanson Boakai, who took one touch to set himself up past CB Mason Trafford and then curled a Messi-esque shot against the corner frame. The Eddies nearly snatched the game at the end off of a set piece but the bar saved OFFC again. RW Horace James looked dangerous for the Eddies, particularly in the second half, as he burned past LB Maykon on two occasions to whip up dangerous crosses.

The Fury did make their own luck, as manager Marc Dos Santos praised the players’ collective efforts after they has gone down to ten men, with the players shifting to a 4-4-1 formation, with the two wingers dropping back and AM Sinisa Ubiparipovic being sacrificed for CB Omar Jarun.

First Half: The Fury dominated possession and fashioned better chances in the first half, with CM Tony Donatelli in particular continuing his fine spring season form with calm composure on the ball and intelligent passing. The Fury’s best chance in the first half came off of a set piece, with RW Phil Davies whipping in his dangerous crosses as he had done in the spring season. Trafford got on the end of one of the crosses and beat the keeper but found the post.

Second Half: The Fury’s best chance in the second half came off of a nice run from Ubiparipovic through the middle, finding Davies alone on the right side of the penalty area, but the shot was lashed wide. Winger Carl Haworth came on for LW Oliver and ST Vini Dantas came on for Tom Heinemann, who worked hard throughout the game. Captain and DM Richie Ryan led the shielding efforts in the midfield.

A big talking point of the game is the performance of Richter, who was making his debut on loan from Toronto FC. He received two yellows, both near the start of the two halves, with Jonke the recipient of both fouls after Richter was dispossessed near the corner flag in the first half after getting to the ball first off of a hopeful long ball, and caught out after attempting to make a backpass with his weaker left foot in the second half. In between those two yellows, Richter displayed a physical presence and good distribution of the ball, but the second yellow especially was the result of two errors compounding each other. He will have to improve his play with the ball on the ground to make his way back into the team after this performance, with Jarun performing capably after he came in.

Conclusion: Overall, a point away with one man down for nearly half of the match, to a fellow Canadian opponent that has the makings of a rivalry for years to come, can only be seen as a positive result, particularly for the hard-working performances from midfield and defense.

NASL 2014 Matchday 11 vs New York Preview

July 20, 2014 – Ottawa Fury FC vs New York Cosmos – Preview

This preview is an excerpt from an article that Stuart Mactaggart and I wrote for RedNation Online.

Ottawa Fury FC will host New York Cosmos this Sunday as they play their first match ever at their new home, the TD Place Stadium, at Landsdowne Park. The Cosmos, who finished 2nd in the NASL Spring Season and have high hopes of taking the Fall Season crown, fell to a surprising 1-3 home loss vs. San Antonio, conceding as many goals in the match as they had during the entire Spring Season.

Earlier this week, Fury FC President John Pugh announced that ticket sales for the home opener have broken the NASL attendance record, currently set by San Antonio in 2012 at 13,151. The squad looks to impress the 13,000+ fans as they look to continue the momentum set by the home win of their CFL cousins Ottawa RedBlacks on Friday, and help write an exciting new chapter in Ottawa football history.

CB Ryan Richter, on loan from Toronto FC, will miss this weekend’s home opener after picking up two yellow cards last week. The Fury could see a return of Omar Jarun or Drew Beckie in the centre-back position alongside Trafford, who was named to his 2nd NASL Team of the Week after his contribution versus Edmonton. Apart from Richter, Fury will also continue to miss CM Nicki Paterson, who is getting close to match fitness but may still be a couple weeks away from his return, as well as GK Romuald Peiser, who is still not match fit following his arrival at the club last week.

    Friendly vs Rangers FC Review

    July 23, 2014 – Ottawa Fury FC vs Rangers FC – 0-1 L – Review

    Ottawa (4-3-3) – DeBellis 6; Soria 7, Trafford 6, Jarun 6, Fresenga 6; Ubiparipovic 6, Ryan (C) 6, Donatelli 6; Mayard 6, Dantas 7, Haworth 7

Rangers (4-4-2) – Bell (Simonsen 46); McGregor, Mohsni, McCulloch, Wallace; Gallagher (Smith 79), Black (Hutton 74), Law, Macleod; Boyd (Shiels 79), Miller

    Fury FC subs – Peiser 7 (DeBellis 30), Davies 7 (Fresenga 50), Maykon 6 (Trafford 56), Paterson 7 (Donatelli 61), Bush 7 (Peiser 62), Agourram 6 (Ubiparipovic 66), Eustaquio 6 (Ryan 66), Caceros 6 (Mayard 80), Schroeter 6 (Haworth 89)

    Fury FC goal – N/A; assist – N/A

Fury FC injuries: LW Oliver (ankle), RB Drew Beckie (ankle)

Fury FC absences: CB Ryan Richter (loan recall), GK Devala Gorrick (rest)

Fury FC quick notes: Our starting midfield, one of the best in the NASL, was outpaced and outmuscled by the younger RFC midfielders, and we were under severe pressure for all of 1st half, especially down our right flank. RFC played many one-twos on that flank, and Fresenga, Jarun, Ryan and Donatelli failed to combine together to effectively shut down their passing moves.

In the 2nd half, the introduction of Davies and Paterson, particularly, shifted the momentum to Ottawa, with good passing and movement down our right flank and we started to open up some chances. Soria looked very good at LCB and is a player that deserves more playing time, with his calm, assured play throughout the 1st half. The introduction of 17 year old F Jacob Schroeter was a great boon for the OFFC Academy and for elite footballer youths in Ottawa in general.

NASL 2014 Matchday 12 at Carolina Preview

July 26, 2014 – Carolina RailHawks vs Ottawa Fury FC – Preview

Injury/fitness: LW Oliver (doubtful), RB Drew Beckie (doubtful), GK Romuald Peiser (doubtful)

    When: Saturday, July 26, 2014 @ 7:30pm EDT

Where: WakeMed Soccer Park, Cary, NC (Watch at NASLLive.com; Listen at TSN1200 AM)

Carolina has started the Fall Season with 3 straight losses, including their first home loss of the season vs. Indy Eleven last week, and will be desperately looking to rectify their situation on Saturday at home vs. Ottawa. They also closed out the Spring Season with a 6-1 hammering loss away at Edmonton, and have lost severe momentum from their 4th placed finish in Spring Season, in which they displayed a perfect 4-0-0 record at home, but stumbling to a 0-2-3 record when visiting away.

For Ottawa, the status of LW Oliver and RB Drew Beckie is doubtful at the moment, with both of them sitting out the 0-1 friendly loss vs. Rangers FC on Wednesday after they both picked up ankle injuries in the 0-1 home loss vs. New York last Sunday. GK Romuald Peiser has built up his match fitness and did feature vs. Rangers, so he may be in contention for a spot in the lineup or on the bench. CM Nicki Paterson may also be a welcome addition to a spot in the lineup or on the bench after he returned from his 3-month injury layoff in the Rangers friendly. CB Ryan Richter is back from his 1-game suspension, and he also received game action on Wednesday, though not with Ottawa, as he played 45 minutes in the TFC friendly vs. Tottenham.

Ottawa has not yet scored in the Fall Season nor in their friendly, and the team will be looking to kick-start their goal-scoring against a team that they famously beat (in the minds of Ottawa supporters anyways) 4-0 at home for Ottawa’s first NASL victory in club history, a match in which Oliver scored 2 headers and the midfield trio of Ubiparipovic, Ryan and Donatelli particularly shone.

Watching both Ottawa games they had there chances but just did not connect. They are looking very close to getting some goal, possibily a breakout of sorts could be upcoming. I don't know if it was the great crowds at the new stadium against tow top clubs that had them getting there chance with the excitment of the game and the COSMOS and Rangers are still going to be among the better clubs they will play.
Watching the replays it was a great atmosphere and RogersTV Ottawa does a nice job in braodcasting the games.
