Yeah? Gabriel (Hebrew: גַבְרִיאֵל) is actually a given name derived from the Hebrew name "Gabriel" meaning "God is my strength". It was popularized by the association with the Biblical angel Gabriel. Guess I'm the strength!
As opposed to the English, I always admired the Scottish brand of soccer.... Sir Alexander Ferguson, Graeme Souness, Kenny Dalglish, Denis Law, Joe Jordan, Colin Hendry, Asa Hartford and Ally McCoist to name a few....
Really? Then explain this recent post from you. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/the-official-mikael-stahre-thread.2079027/page-15#post-36574316 On May 2nd, Falvo said: "Scottish claim to fame was Kenny Dalglish on Liverpool. They can’t play."
It was true then and now and I’ll easily explain. Scotland simply can't play well together , never won anything as a nation and they only have two important clubs. One of which went belly up, demoted to the 4th tier and just came back up after 5 years I believe. From what I recall though , their players always had good individual skills and stood out over many English players. They played a beautiful style of soccer in the late 70’s and 80’s in the old English league. Kenny Dalglish was always Scotland's claim to fame and in my opinion , one of the greatest players ever to play in England. When I think back to that time, I remember many English forwards but he stood out over all of them, including superstar English internationals , Trevor Francis and Kevin Keegan. Same with Nicol who was a standout defender for Liverpool and won everything in the 80’s. Sir Alex’s record as a manager with Man United speaks for itself. That’s not coming from me , that’s a fact. I remember many Scots standing out during the old NASL as well. You had Willie Johnston , Peter Lorimer, Jimmy Johnstone , Mr. San Jose GK Mike Hewitt, Jim Gabriel first as a player and then as a coach with the Sounders and the Quakes. Bruce Rioch was the first English born player ever to play for Scotland and was a great player for the Sounders. Then you had Stewart Scullion and John Bain. Its sad though because even though they always had good individual players, despite their many WC appearances , their national team never did anything nor could their clubs ever play well as a cohesive unit or win anything in the Euro Cups. I believe Celtic won a European Cup and Rangers a Cup winners Cup but that was before my time. Here is an icon NASL moment when Willie Johnston who took a swig a beer at Spartan Stadium before taking a corner kick which lead to a goal beating the Quakes.... I remember the Scots and the Glens always had good amateur players in San Francisco’s Sunday league as well back when we played them.
Back to the thread, I can’t imagine things are settled with Fioranelli and Stahre. Looking back, Dom was fired the next morning after a win.....what will it take for Stahre to get fired after continuous loses?
He won't get fired this year, and he'll be the coach next year. Even if Jesse wanted to replace him, imagine the reaction he'd get from Fish and company. Wait, we ate Dom's salary at your request, we promoted a guy from within and he got the team to the playoffs and USOC semifinals, and you replaced him with another (presumably not cheap) Euro hire. And now you want us to eat his salary!? (Jesse thrown out on his ear).
If Dom was subsequently hired by the Gals after a matter of weeks, wouldn’t LA have go pay his contract. Usually , that’s the way it works n most worlds.
Not sure how that works, but regardless, we had an internal hire "for free" who actually got some decent results from the team despite some ups and downs. And then we went and hired another Euro, who presumably did not come cheap. And add onto that Jesse asking ownership to eat Dawkins's contract. I just think he may be quickly using up his good will with ownership. Jesse keeps walking in there with purchase orders - euro coaches, another DP, etc. and the results have been significantly worse.
Vako is a Fioranelli guy. But Cummings, Hyka, Hoesen, and Ureña were all Chris Leitch hires. Maybe some input from Dom? Maybe some input from Jesse? But Jesse wasn't with the team yet. I still want to believe that Jesse is a good GM. But he's made some bad step by miscalculating how good MLS is, and that we need to bring in MUCH better guys from Europe. Magnus and Qwiberg are not good enough. Go Quakes!! Danger and Danielle for coaches!! - Mark
I'll pass on Danger but Danielle would be a fine coach. She knows the defensive side of the game especially well.
Danger was actually a successful coach at the lower levels. He's a former offensive player, so I think that he'd want to see attacking offensive soccer. I do think that Danielle would make an excellent coach, but I worry about male players listening to her. I think most USian men would listen, not so sure about foreign players, but maybe. She is after all Danielle Slaton. In any case, Stahre has to go. Go Quakes!! - Mark
Danger's been around the block a few times. I just don't think he has the edge or passion to be a coach at this point. He'd rather just call the game and then go have a pint. I would hope the players would listen to and respect Danielle. I think she'd quickly win them over because she is so articulate and knows the game well.
Dangerfield told me a while back that he really has no interest in coaching. Don't know if anything has changed or not. I’ve also heard that he was a great coach on the amateur level with the Oaks and at the DeAnza force. He coached my cousin on the youth level and he taught him quite a bit. He would be good but I just don’t think he wants to lose his regular paying job.
OK, so no Dangerfield. Let's look into snagging one of the NASL coaches who are now at loose ends. Marc Dos Santos? OR, we could look at the coaching staffs of those teams that did not make the WC and snag someone from there (maybe an assistant, rather than head coach). Maybe someone from the staffs of Chile, Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala, or some such. Or we could look to big clubs in Europe, and grab an assistant, or the head coach of one of their lower division or youth teams. (Like their U-23 coaches.) There are a ton of options for us out there. We don't have to suffer with stinking Dim Stahre! He's awful, and clearly out of his depth. GO Quakes!! Fire Stahre!! - Mark
I can barely deal with Dangerfield during the broadcasts, if he was on the coaching staff I'd probably stop watching soccer altogether.
At least he speaks better English than a Stahre. Anyway, other than the weekley halftime raw raw interviews , we wouldn’t be hearing him as we are currently if he were coach. No he has a real high paying secure job at a Silicon Valley recruiting agency. He has been doing it for at least 25 years.
Just talked to Dangerfield's friend. He told me Chris actually owns the recruiting agency and works out of his home. He said he would consider coaching if he were offered quite a bit of money but it would have to be equal to what Dom, Sigi or Bruce Arena were making. If Dom was making at least $500k, I doubt Chris will be offered that amount of money especially since they would have to pay off whatever they owe Stahre.
