You'll eat those words the day that Barca win the Champions League using Curt's revolutionary "when our defense has the ball, under no circumstances must anybody in the midfield or attack move" strategy.
Funnily enough (or perhaps slightly interesting enough) I was reading through the MLS Fact and Record Book a few days ago and noticed that no one had ever come back from a 3 goal defect to win a game* before and wondered when it would happen. *The Metro stars were down 3-0 to Tampa Bay in 1996 and scored 3 to tie the game in regulation and eventually won in the shoot out but certainly not in regulation.
Funny that many pundits - as recently as last nights GC game - bring out the "2 goal lead is the most dangerous" bromide while 3-0 is 99.9% unbeatable. Just goes to show what BS the saying is - I'll take a 2-0 lead anytime. I bet that if you look at the MLS stats that teams leading by 2 goals go on to win 90+% of the time.
Well, this is interesting. http://www.espnfc.us/major-league-s...-deal-that-hinged-on-promotion-and-relegation Is promo/relegation was instituted, this season would be so exciting for us Galaxy fans.
Word is that Orlando is about to snag Dom Dwyer from SKC. Good thing we don't need a player like that.
There is that race from the bottom level of excitement the pro/reg system brings that's missing from the, "oh well, missed the playoffs again, there's always next year" format that every US sport has. The US sports format is such a snowflake system in that it likes to also reward losers. Everybody gets a medal and gets to stay in the top tier league...
Dwyer has wanted to go to Orlando and Orlando has wanted him since they formed a MLS team. Dwyer was on loan there from KC back in Orlando's USL days and that is where he first had success and led Orlando to a USL championship before getting called back to KC. I doubt any other team had any chance to pry Dwyer away from KC without making him a DP and offering significant cash.
And without that safety net the original investors would not have risked the money on an historically losing proposition and we would still be sitting here without a D1 league. Small price to pay.
I agree. There are good points made on both sides. As an investor of a D1 franchise, I would be crazy to want to possibly put myself in a situation where I am taking money away from my pockets. As a fan, I would love pro/reg (i.e., if the owners of my team cared) because it would push for teams to be better and end of season games would have more meaning and excitement. Anyway, I don't think there is the infrastructure for a sustainable pro/reg anyway. The closest league I can see where pro/reg might work would be baseball, because it's America's equivalent to the world game.
Might happen if there truly is a “cap” on MLS expansion. Get to 28 teams and things might start to stagnate after a decade or so. If USL continues to show it can produce crowds on par if not better than some MLS counterparts and MLS/USL/SUM could work out something financially that would make the drop from MLS to USL prestige rather than financial.
That couldn't work at all because almost all the minor league player contracts are owned by major league teams.
I was referencing in terms of just infrastructure like established teams, leagues, and stadiums. I understand that it's similar to how MLS and their USL-affiliates are starting to pop up. I figure that if a pro/reg system were to occur that new league would no longer be called MLS, but something like the National American Soccer League or the National Football League or something like that since all teams in MLS are franchises and teams from other divisions do not fall under the umbrella of MLS.
Kakà reminding us that he is a former World Player of the Year. The swerve on that ball was filthy...
Really enjoyable match between Atl and Orl. Almost reminded me of a big Euro league match in terms of energy, skill, intensity, positive play, and speed of play and thought. The Gs are terrible right now.
In my head watching Gio talking to Garett at the end of the All Star game. "Nah, that prat got sacked last week. New gaffer will have the team in shape by the time you sign"
They were facing a young nervous keeper but I still had no confidence in them. Their body language was showing their lack of confidence. Dwyer struck his ok but he blatantly telegraphed his shot (again). Then Gio just flat out missed. Btw, this game was crying out for Alessandrini. He would have helped the AS's a lot.
Watched the US Women's tournament that just finished tonight. OMG, the Dwyer/Lerioux son is the cutest kid ever. Also, enjoyed the soccer. Australia kicked everyone's butt.
If not the US then Go Matildas!! I've been a fan since 2000, coincidentally the same year they put out a nude calendar. They had a group photo for the cover and then individual players for each month, all tastefully done. Each pic had a personal inspirational inscription written on it by the player. In fact the only reasons I bought it was to help the team financially and to read the sayings, barely noticing their beautiful and luscious physiques.
