This is the oldest still-operating Pie and Mash shop in London (- and therefore in the world). It dates back to 1892, and the furnishings and fittings are quite lovely in a basic way. The servings are generous and here you have the option of stewed eels as well as the usual range.

Speaking as a former (born n bred) resident of the People's Republic of Sarf London (Brixton), One often finds the real London in the South and the East of the city. . .Pie & Mash, Ah, its lovely stuff. . .

What is it the lad from Pennsylvania asks?

It is what people should do with a potato – that is mash it up

Pie and Mash is quite simply the most traditional food that London has to offer. "Eel Pie and Mash Houses" have been around since the 18th century - the first ones opening in pre-Dickensian and Victorian London.

Historically, the pies were made from scraps of beef and vegetables, leftovers or from the local markets, under a pastry crust. The mashed potatoes were liberally covered in parsley gravy or "liquor".

Nice to sample with Jellied Eels :D

    Mashed Potatoes!

It's as English as Fish n' Chips and Vindaloo Curry

Sorry, but pies should not have meat. And incidentally, I recently found out what marmite is. UGH!

    Pizza Pie?

    Agree with you on marmite.

But make sure you try a pork pie and a scotch egg while you are over there.

I'm not moving to England for the food! I mean, really, pork pie? Now, granted, I don't eat pork, but if I did, I still wouldn't eat that. ;)
When I want food, I'll visit family in Madrid. :D

P.S. ganu, the last two lines in your sig are of slightly contrasting nature, non?
