More like the c word and the t word are blocked by bigsoccer so I needed another word kinda self explanitory. Perhaps I should have said "Feminine-American of less than pleasant disposition" instead?
Patrice O'Neal is great. http://thinkprogress.org/2007/05/16/gibson-joke/ Watch the video, I'm sure most of you will be enraged. I loffed and loffed.
You can only blame society of humorlessness if this bit was actually funny. Personally, I make distasteful jokes all the time. I tend to shy away from jokes about punching women in the face, during sex or otherwise, because there's no humor in it.
I didn't realize they had commercials on their show (I listen to boring sports talk radio in the morning so I can keep up with the scores). With commercial sponsorship to worry about, this was all but inevitable. Very few corporate sponsors want to be associated with violent rape jokes as far as I can tell.
The main reason, I suppose, is that a lot of people don't know that they are related companies (I didn't until you posted this). A lot harder to make that distinction when you are listening to a program on a machine that has a visible XM logo on it and O&A are on the news as XM personalities.
I'll take it a step further and note that it's not uncommon for companies that have the ability to market to very different segments under different names that the general public may not know are related. For instance, did you know that Campbell's sells a tomato sauce. It's not under the Campbell's name because market research showed that people would think a Campbell's tomato sauce might be a bit runny given the association with Campbell's tomato soup. Enjoy your Prego.
And paid dearly for it. CBS (see, I came full circle here) just canceled Jericho. I guess we're even.
Radio is run by a bunch of spineless people who will never stand by their employees if god forbid a couple of people become offended. EFF them. These people should grow a thicker skin. If you don't like what you hear CHANGE THE GOD DAMN CHANNEL. So what if you are offended by a couple of things. Don't listen. Don't take it away from people who like the show. I mean radio is going to become complete shit really soon. I mean people are being fired for absolutely nothing. At least O and A still have their regular radio show. But in NY, the station recently fired JV and Elvis for making a prank phone call to a chinese restaurant and some Asian people got offended. It's ridiculous. Listen to what got them fired - http://youtube.com/watch?v=ETdcYLn88So Why would some this offend anybody. When I first listened to this, I thought it was one of the funniest prank calls I've ever heard. I was shocked to see that this got them fired. This isn't racist and JV and Elvis aren't racist either. JV's wife is asian. If people can't tell the difference between hate speech and humor than we are in big trouble.
This is where this is headed folks. Don't think Stern and everyone else aren't walking on eggshells right now.
Yeah, Howard is now going to have to delete violent rape jokes from his repertoire. Jesus, people, can we focus a little bit here?
So are the regular rape jokes still ok? So who controls the media, the Govt, the Sponsors, or the Stock Market?
It was not rape. It was a donkey punch. The only people using the word "rape" are members of the media. Find me the word rape in that sequence and I will give you a cookie.
So you're saying that SD was correct about the violence part....just not about the lack of consent part.
Right, in the bit, Rice wanted to be punched. Matt, you're even an embarassment to the glibertarians.
