    Starts 2nd half:

    And I think he scored:

56 ' flour plays a ball in the alley, in the attempt to resolve the defender Gaines shoots and the ball jumps to the 2:0 in the stitches #sv98

starts on the bench along with Boyd.

well at least now, Gaines is finally making matchday squads, 1st time in ages in a competitive game.

Well he’s been on the bench for both matches so he HAS made the match day squad. He just hasn’t entered a game yet

    not sure what you mean

    2BL
    Game 1-bench
Game 2-left out of the matchday squad

    Cup
Game 1-left out of the matchday squad

left out of the matchday squad means he didn't make the XI or bench to begin with.

Oh I thought I saw he was on the bench today. Also didn’t know there was a second league game squeezed in between here

    Carry on

At extreme risk of being the "He Should Find A New Club" guy, I'll say this:

He should find a new club.

Since joining Darmstadt two summers ago, Gaines has played in three official matches, a number that is showing no signs of increasing. Darmstadt does not have a reserve team, so he isn't even getting games in the lower divisions. He made the bench in early August but has not been seen since.

I think Gaines may still have enough stock for an MLS team to take a flyer on him this winter. If guys like Shaft Brewer and James Murphy can get deals, it's not crazy to think Gaines could too. But whether or not that's true, what seems clear is that if he's going to get on with career, it needs to happen elsewhere.

I hear there's the potential of an MLS team in Austin....

I guess he could go to the USL team there instead if he wants.

    On the bench:

The other 2 Yanks (Boyd & Sirigu) got in the match, but no Gaines.

Winter Camp already started and he's currently on vacation in USA and will meet up with the team later on during camp.

no idea if he's getting loaned or not or whether he continues to be a back up player.

It's three strikes and he's out I'm afraid

    1) he's surplus to their requirements or they'd want him fully-fit with everyone else, 2) they either don't need or don't want him around to get ready for the "ruckrunde" so he's really a backup to the backup players, and 3) they don't have anyone firmly interested in taking him off their hands so there's no rush for him to get fully fit either

Welp - not looking great - but Darmstadt hasn't really shown they know what they are doing overall....

I also thought he had what it takes (physically) for BL2. I wonder if there is more to the story.

doesn't have to be anything to the story. 2BL isn't really a great place for youngsters.

a lot of young players barely get chances and when they do they play scrap minutes. And a lot of chances also depend on injuries to others.

there are still promising youngsters there and players of decent ages that were never given chances in 1BL and that were forced to go lower level. Not counting those 2 categories and players that made their way from RL/3rd Liga, climbing the ladder.

It's pretty much a place for the 1BL rejects, a lot of late 20s/early 30s players who aren't good enough for 1BL. In fact who's best chance to play 1BL is through promotion.

Gaines isn't the only player who's nothing but a backup and the killer blow is that unlike 1BL where only 3 clubs don't have a reserve team. Majority of 2BL clubs don't have a reserve team. Which is why guys like Maloney, Gaines, Lankford etc end up doing nothing whatsoever but train if they don't make squads.
