PAOK fined and threatened with European ban

Greek club PAOK FC have been fined and threatened with a ban from European competitions for breaching UEFA’s club licensing regulations, European football’s governing body said. UEFA said its disciplinary committee had fined PAOK, who have reached the last 32 of the Europa League, 250,000 euros, of which 200,000 euros is suspended for a probationary period of three years.

“In addition, PAOK have been excluded from one UEFA club competition for which they qualify in the next three seasons. The exclusion is also suspended for a probationary period of three years,” UEFA said.
UEFA added: “PAOK must prove that, by June 30, 2012, they have no outstanding overdue financial obligations towards employees, tax authorities, social security institutions or other clubs arising from transfer agreements incurred before 30 June 2012.

“UEFA’s competent body will ensure that PAOK comply with this order" said the press release.

Former Leicester City and Greece midfielder Theodoros Zagorakis has helped rescue the club from collapse since taking over as president in 2007.

However, twice Greek champions PAOK, famous for their fanatical support, still struggle to make ends meet due to the difficult financial situation in the country.

UEFA licensing regulations ban clubs from taking part in European competition if they owe money to tax authorities, government social security institutions, other clubs or their own employees.

Balkan sides make the "Meanest Fans List"

Fans are a big part of football, but besides their great support, they also bring a dark side in some cases to this beautiful game. bleacherreport.com has compiled a list of the "20 Meanest Fan Bases in World Football" and some Balkan sides surely would be in it.

Serbian side Red Star Belgrade have some of the most famous hooligans in the game. They tend to bring out their worst during rivalry matches with Partizan Belgrade. (see an example here)

Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb are known as to have one of Eastern Europe's most brutal fan bases. From riots to battles in the streets and stands with visiting fan bases, such as those of geographical neighbor's Sparta Prague, Dinamo fans are not to be taken lightly. (see an example here)

Greek side P.A.O.K. are well known as some of the meanest fans in Europe. The above video highlights the kind of host they can be to rival opponents. They have been involved in numerous fan crashes including one with Fenerbahce SK fans in Istanbul, Turkey. (see an example here)

Few fanbase's can make the phrase "Welcome to Hell," seem more real than those of Turkish side Galatasaray. Their previous stadium of Ali Sami Yen was one of the toughest places to play in Europe, and they have only continued that tradition since moving to the massive Turk Telekom Arena. In 2005 it took 8,000 plus police officers and officials to keep fan violence from breaking out between the fans of Galatasaray and Fenerbahce in the 2005 Turkish Cup final. (see here)

Some of them mean enough to steal a Shamrock Rovers flag in Tallaght Stadium in November.

not really a good forum bro. better off in Greeksoccer.com or Xtratime.org to talk anout PAOK. More PAOK fans use them sites.

On a PAOK related note we play Kerkyra tonight to fight for 2nd place against Asteras Tripolis with Olympiakos ahead by 12 points. Paok is not likely to win the league but we can still get some silverware in the Greek Cup. we face Levadiakos on the 28th or February

    FORZA PAOK!

Hoping to make it back to Thessaloniki in August or September and to take in a game or two.

PAOK are in an excellent position. I expect them to offer more of a challenge for the league title and hopefully we'll see them in the CL this year.

With Fenerbahce banned from Europe and with Stevens in charge, PAOK has a good chance of making the Champions League this year or, at the very least, of making another solid Europa League run.

I wonder if Stevens took this job partly in view of positioning himself for the national team job? Surely, what other job in Greece is more desirable for a man of his age and pedigree? The only thing lacking in his career is the experience of a World Cup or Euros, something he can easily attain with Greece, who have been granted qualification with relative ease over the past years.

New reports suggest PAOK are hot on the heels of Sotiris Ninis, although Ninis sees the move as a last resort unless a more desirable move to either England, Germany, or Spain doesn't pan out.

Ninis does have admirer's in Spain, including Getafe head coach Manolo Jimenez and, possibly, Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, an associate at Betis and Malaga, both of whom had once coached AEK and are acutely aware of Ninis' talents. However, Ninis will want to make a return to the national team in anticipation for the World Cup, so whichever move he makes will consider whether or not he is offered a guarantee of regular playing time, a near certainty if he makes the move to PAOK.

If PAOK manage to grab his signature, then they've made the signing of the summer. Add a top class forward and PAOK are in business. There are suggestions already that Peruvian Paolo Guerrero, who starred at the Copa America in 2011, may be on the radar. Now at Corinthians, he may be persuaded by a big money move and by the prospect of reuniting with his former Hamburg manager, Hubb Stevens.

PAOK registered an emphatic 6-0 win over last season's 4th placed Ligue 1 finishers, OGC Nice. Athanasiadis, who scored a second-half hat-trick; Georgiadis; and Salpingidis put in wonderful displays. Stevens has done a remarkable job and PAOK look like a team that can really shape up with one or two more quality signings.

Anybody know where I can stream PAOK games? I'd even be willing to pay for a regular, quality stream. I'm in the US and there's a distinct lack of Greek league coverage here (obviously.)

You can use FirstRowSports to watch just about every and any soccer game you could imagine. It's a great website.

However, the website's address changes periodically (the FBI has a habit of seizing the domain), but you should have no problems using the link below.

    http://firstrowus1.eu/

The only catch is the annoying ads and adware/spyware that could potentially infect your computer.

In a stunning turn of events, PAOK is back in the Champions League, despite having been defeated by Metalist, who UEFA have banned due to a match-fixing incident a few years ago. The tie is made all the more intriguing since PAOK are due to play against the team Hubb had achieved his greatest successes, Schalke.

I'd love to see two Greek teams in the Champions League, but Schalke are too strong.

Maybe Hubb can pull some magic in order to inspire the boys past his former club. I doubt it, but we can dream right? Likely back to Europe League...

Schalke now have to come to Greece needing a goal. Huntelaar and Papadopoulos are out injured. PAOK might have a shot at this.

The unfortunate thing is that the game will be played in an empty Toumba Stadium....which greatly benefits Schalke.

The Toumba knows how to raise an atmosphere. A full house would have been intimidating to those Schalke players. That's such as shame.

I forgot to mention, Farfan, another star player at Schalke, might miss the second leg through injury. Still, Draxler will be handful.

Draxler was too much for PAOK. There was no stopping him. He scored a nice goal to put Schalke ahead on away goals and he was as cold as ice at the end with his assist for the third (and game winning!) goal. Tragic for PAOK and Greek soccer en large. Had PAOK played in front of their fans, this game would have been theirs.

There's still one more game to serve on the ban on fans so the first Europa League game will be empty too.

PAOK can't complain that much, truth be told. They quite likely took part in some match fixing sometime in recent years, which of course was the very crime that gave Metallist the boot. Even Olympiakos faced accusations in the Europa League against Israeli opposition.

The bans on PAOK's home games and on Metallist are nothing more than meaningless posturings from UEFA, who really can't do all that much to begin with. I really doubt their Fair Play Plan will even work and it will probably spell the end of domestic league championships as we know them. Honestly, within ten years, the Champions League will simply because a league for all the best teams in Europe (it will be strange watching Olympiakos perennially finish at the bottom, though:oops:; still, that's better than PAO and AEK's bankruptcy:unsure:). That may explain why Rummenigge, the ECA chairman, is tiptoeing his weight behind the winter World Cup in Qatar. By that time, he'll be at the helm of the pan-European league and the change-up in the calendar will be their window of opportunity to completely shake everything up because of the disruption that will cause to the TV contracts. Shyster that Rummenigge, as are all politicians in which ever shape or form they come in.

    **********
PAOK have signed a lot of former PAO players. Katsouranis, Tziolis, Spyropoulos, Salpingidis, and, if word of mouth is correct, Ninis (on loan). It's the right move for Ninis in terms of his prospects with the NT and this summer's World Cup (Greece should qualify). PAOK also need a player like Ninis. Lucas and Stoch will do wonders, but Ninis will elevate PAOK to title contenders. It wasn't that long ago when he played a central part in winning PAO the double and, fact is, he'll be more influential at PAOK now than he was at PAO then. For me, he would be a bigger signing than Saviola.

The key for him is to avoid serious injury, which will be hard to do considering the butchers who constitute the majority of Greek Super League defenders and given his difficult history, and, concomitantly, he'll need to find a groove, a swagger of confidence that will allow him to reach his best (if he avoids injuries, he should gain confidence). I think he can avoid injury because his game has evolved. If you watch him now, you'll see that there's a much stronger emphasis on movement off the ball than there was before. And he always finds space. If there's no space, he creates it. He's also much more conscious of risking injury when he's on the ball.

A lot of people dismiss him these days, but this is a player who really excites me and PAOK fans should be excited, too. Just put it this way, he'll be double the player this season than he was when he won the double.

Can't really complain about the Zimbru Chisinau draw in the Europa League qualifiers.
