Expansion Draft Format These are the rules from the 2016 MLS Expansion Draft and are subject to change before the draft takes place. ATL and MN will flip to decide who goes first. Existing teams are allowed to protect 11 players from their rosters. Generation adidas players are automatically protected. Once a player is claimed from a club’s non-protected roster, that club is allowed to move a player from its non-protected roster to its protected roster. Once two players are claimed from a team’s non-protected roster, that team is eliminated from the expansion draft and not allowed to lose any further players.
The MLS SuperDraft This is an annual event, taking place in January of each year, in which the teams of Major League Soccer select players who have graduated from college or otherwise been signed by the league. The SuperDraft was first instituted in 2000, as a combination of the MLS College Draft, in which players having graduated from college were selected. The MLS Supplemental Draft Process in which all other players were chosen. The draft is divided into four rounds in which each club has a selection, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions, with the expansion teams getting the first pick.
We will be in the Western Conference. http://www.mnunitedfc.com/news/2016/08/22/mls-announces-2017-conferences
United may make the playoffs which in most years is a good thing but this years will delay the MLS clock. The first decision is how many of the existing players to keep the 1st year. So who do United keep? either as starters or back ups and who to put on an affiliate team. Having a 3rd Division option is something previous expansion teams did not have from the beginning. Should United partner with an existing USL team, start its own or elevate the Reserve Team to D3? Anybody made a MLS depth chart yet? We can start with existing players and fill it in as the team fill in theirs.
I'm fairly certain that we're going to lose one or two guys in the expansion draft, so the herd will be thinned by one or both of the expansion teams.
need 28 players: GOAL KEEPERS (3): DEFENDERS (9): MIDFIELDERS (12): FORWARDS (4): (INCLUDED IN THE 28) DESIGNATED PLAYERS (DP): UP TO 3 HOMEGROWN PLAYERS (HG): INT'L ROSTER SPOTS FILLED (INT'L): GENERATION ADIDAS PLAYERS (GA): NUMBERS MAYBE TWEEKED DEPENDING ON COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Aren't the rules for the expansion draft that we can protect 11 guys and, if we lose a guy, can then protect another guy? And, aren't we guaranteed not to lose more than two guys to either team?
That's how it's been run in the past (plus you get to protect your Generation Adidas and Home Grown guys)...but, as we all know, player acquisition rules in MLS can often have the appearance of a rousing game of Calvinball...
On Thursday, Minnesota United officially announced that Tim Carter will be the director of their Development Academy as the team moves to MLS. While most fans will be unfamiliar with Carter, those involved in youth soccer circles around the country will likely be aware of him. In fact, the former Shattuck-St. Mary’s DA Director may be one of the most qualified directors in the whole US Soccer DA program. Carter, who grew up in Maine, has been involved with coaching for 40 years. He started out in the 1970s as an assistant coach at two different colleges before becoming head coach at Eckerd College. At the same time, he acquired his USSF A License. In the following years, he went on to get coaching licenses from England’s FA and the Netherlands KNVB. He acquired a Union of European Football Trainers Diploma, US Soccer National Instructors license, and most recently his US Soccer Academy Director License. - See more at: http://fiftyfive.one/2016/09/minnes...ent-director-tim-carter/#sthash.IpM94vdl.dpuf
