Two writers not holding back... http://www.slate.com/articles/sport...odbye_and_good_riddance_j_rgen_klinsmann.html But as has been the case throughout Jürgen Klinsmann’s five-year tenure, it’s the details of those losses that betrayed him, and it’s those details that made his firing on Monday overdue. In Columbus and in Costa Rica, the United States was outcoached and seemed underprepared, but that’s hardly new under Klinsmann. The team has suffered disappointing losses only to bounce back. What seems to have changed here is that U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati and the federation he leads could no longer ignore the evidence that Klinsmann’s players, like American fans, had lost faith in the man who was supposed to bring U.S. soccer to glory. http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/11/21/armchair-analyst-jurgen-klinsmanns-usmnt-era-comes-close On top of the excuses, it was Klinsmann whose team was repeatedly out-shot, out-possessed, out-fought and out-played against the likes of Panama, Honduras and even Haiti. A month after giving that quote, the US lost again -- this time to Mexico, and this time with a trip to the Confederations Cup on the line. Down went another one of Klinsmann's stated goals, and another of destructive peccadilloes popped up: He seemed to blame the loss on fullback Fabian Johnson, who had to be subbed off after 110 minutes of playing through a calf injury. Now I'm 1000% sure we have a legitimate chance to qualify for Russia 2018. Goodbye Klinsi! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't think I am underestimating Wood's situation. I believe that Morris and Wood are the only two for which a legitimate argument could be made. I am not convinced that Wood would not have bounced back but it is possible the deciding factor was Klinsmann. Onyewu Dempsey and Johnson were, in my opinion, in a different situation than every one of the players you mentioned (other than Wood) due to the fact that the US development system was far different and more reliant on colleges and universities. While we now have a significant number of US players (not just foreign developed players) that have been playing professionally before 20, in 2000-2010 (to pick an arbitrary number), that wasn't the case. As a result, there were far fewer players ready to begin making a contribution at the professional level, let alone with the USMNT. Even now, with a few notable exceptions, it is impossible to compare the development paths of the typical American with that of a typical foreign born player such as Brooks. Of course Americans with foreign passports fall somewhere in between (due to different choices available to them) but aren't typical American players either. There are several players that Klinsmann brought but did not play or that got almost no time. In a tournament with the kind of conditions they had in Brazil, a 23 man roster is much more important than a typical European tournament. I am aware that some international coaches sometimes bring future stars to the wc. If they do it, in a position of need, while leaving a player that potentially could help the team more than that player at the most important tournament in the world, than they are stupid. Some coaches have the luxury of having a team that has so much talent that one spot may be somewhat expendable. I fail to see how the US fit(s) into that category. There is one player that was left off of the team that recieved most of the attention, but he was far from the only omission. Whether they would have made a difference or not is impossible to say. O'Brien contributed very little. That was the point. BUT, considering the potential upside and the possible replacements at the time, I don't think it was a bad gamble. Of course I never had any access to medical records or predictions so I don't know what the odds were that he would be able to play. If the actual chances of him being able to play were low, than I might have to change my assessment.
I just heard that Klinsi is Raus...Klinsi Raus....Mein Gott, Klinsi Raus!!............ Mein Gott, there is a Gott!
At least Klinsmann had the great timing to implode just before a four month break! There's plenty of time to assemble a conventional 4-4-2 before the March 24 home game against Honduras. I love the player, but Klinsmann the coach has been dead to me since 2014. The 2+ years to get him buried was way too long. Sometimes this sport can be cruel.
This might be the best gif of all time. Of course, you gotta love Herrera for being the perfect canvas.

Was never a JK homer and actually wanted Bradley to keep his job back in 2011, but one Jurgen got the job, I of course wanted him to succeed. And I actually did see signs of progress. From March to October 2013 I saw the US play as well as I ever have, and show a level of depth I had never seen. I genuinely believe we could have qualified two sides in 2014. And while I am not giving all the credit to the manager he deserves his fair share. But he also deserves the blame for what's happened since 2014. And for those results he needs to go. But I don't think the firing of your manager should ever be cause for celebration.
I'm not excited that Klinsmann was fired and Bruce is apparently going to take over. I am relieved that we are rid of him and concerned that the damage he did will hang around.
Given this day, it feels like I need to give Jurgen a proper sendoff. We began so beautifully together but eventually drifted apart. And so, my final post on this man who simply tried to bring some joy to ignorant and disrespectful Americans. So long my friend.
