Honda on at halftime for Kubo, who looked sluggish and perhaps unwell in the first half.

Some bad defending on a short corner leads to Syria's headed opener. Ideguchi makes his debut, replacing the limping Yamaguchi. Gamba players comprise the entire midfield.

Inui on for Haraguchi. Terrific attack down the left side sees Nagatomo get behind the defense and square the ball for an overlapping Konno who taps in.

    Asano goes on for Konno.

In the past I always felt like that Japan put too much weight into playing well during friendlies, so I'm not too disappointed with poor friendly performances.

So Honda tweets about the second-hand smoke bill not passing a couple hours after the game, and everyone replies about how fast he changed mode from soccer to politics. As if he is really going to dwell on a friendly against Syria. I like this, and hope other famous athletes or celebrities would speak up.

He probably knew it's a good timing when everyone talks about football in Japan to speak about that to garner more audience. He's smart.

Australia beat Saudi Arabia 3-2. Australia were very scrappy but Saudi looked exhausted in the second half, not surprising given their season finished last month. I really hope we beat Australia in Saitama, we've had too many frustrating stalemates with them and needing to get three points in Saudi in the final game... less than ideal.

Three teams on 16 points now. Goal difference might be crucial at the very end.

Australia badly needs the point/points of Japan vs Australia match. You will be in trouble if you
    do not win against Iraq.

Australia have been playing some average football in WCQ but I feel Confederations Cup will give them great preparation for the next game. It's frustrating having had so many draws with them especially at home. It sounds like Iraq have a new manager now and with no motivation of qualifying for third spot it will be interesting if they bring in some new and untested players.
