Two separate Interviews (4 web-pages each) with Miyama -

Also a video, all about her legendary FK - surely the greatest in womens' world cup ever ? However notice the calm afterwards (it was the last kick of the game) - I think the stadium was only 1/4 full, and mostly hostile !

And I am quite sure no player, man or woman, has ever scored TWO FKs in a single World Cup game :D

Re: Official Japanese WOMEN'S NT Thread [R]

TOKYO (AP)—The Japanese women’s soccer team canceled a tour in the United States on Tuesday because of the swine flu outbreak.

The team was scheduled to play the U.S. team on May 20 in Frisco, Texas, and May 23 in Sandy City, Utah. The team was to travel to Canada for a match in Toronto on May 25.

Japan’s health ministry confirmed the fourth case of swine flu on Sunday, a day after the country’s first three were reported. The ministry said the fourth case is a teenager who recently returned from Canada on a high school trip with the three others.

The Japan Football Association, which announced the decision, said it may have to pay damages for breach of contract.

A bit of an overreaction IMHO. You'd think it was bubonic plague.

I completely agree. I suspect it was to save money. I doubt very much they would have to compensate the USA and Canadians, I bet there is an exlcusion clause.

Anyway, just found this on YouTube, it is LA and Aya is still playing beautifully at this level.

Two superb action photos of Aya Miyama - best I have ever seen, are here -

And I finally saw her play in NJ - and I got her autograph afterwards ! :)

And a posed photo too with the little one (smaller than I even expected - how does she do it?) - waiting for a friend to email it to me.

Did you make sure to tell her that you are one of her biggest fans?

Re: Official Japanese WOMEN'S NT Thread [R]

I did not have to. She figured that out ! :)

I told her that after the Olymnpics I sent to GK Miho (at Yonogo Belle) an email to express consolation. And that Miho did email me back.

And Aya then exclaimed "I Know !".

So, not many emails in English received at Belle ! Women's soccer is a small world.

Nadeshiko headed to Europe to play the first games of 2009 - but the USA based players are not available (contracts I suppose ? - or too expensive to fly separately ??) - and also excluded is GK Miho F -

Also I see there is an u-19 AFC tournament at the same time -

    http://www.jfa.or.jp/eng/topics/2009/102.html

I see that Iwabuchi is in, also in is her u-17 team-mate and goal-scoring machine Kameoka; also in is Yuka Kado of Belle.

“It’s very disappointing that we couldn’t win, but Germany are a strong side. However, we were able to create scoring chances,” Nadeshiko Japan interim coach Satoshi Mochizuki commented.

“We did 60 percent of what we wanted to do. But we couldn’t finish and struggled to win the ball back. We should improve the physical side of our game and our accuracy.”

Sounds like they settled down after a shaky start, and Ando hit the cross-bar. Later they bought on two (!) FWs, including a debut for Asano N, so they must have been controlling MF even without Miyama and Sawa.

I see the u-19 team tied 1-1 with Australia, conceding a late goal, despite Iwabuchi scoring earlier. Does anyone know the format of this tournament ?

Also wonder if anyone would give a brief translation of the above (machine version not so good !) TiA

Re: Official Japanese WOMEN'S NT Thread [R]

From JFA web-site - with slight editting to title only because it mentions the result of the 2nd game too -

Nadeshiko beat France (in both friendlies)

Shinobu Ohno, Kozue Ando, Yukari Kinga and substitute Mami Yamaguchi scored for the visitors.
The Nadeshiko attacked hard from outset of the game and threatened with efforts from Ando and Yuki Nagasato.
In the 15th minute, Ohno opened the scoring with a shot from a loose ball. Ando made it 2-0 with a strike in the 38th minute.
After the break, Japan interim coach Satoshi Mochizuki brought on two fresh players from the bench – forward Yamaguchi of Swedish club Umeo IK and Albirex Niigata Ladies full-back Megumi Kamionobe.
In the 55th minute, Kinga slotted home a Yamaguchi rebound from close range before Yamaguchi took her turn with a shot off a Karina Maruyama pass in stoppage time.
Mochizuki commented, “I used many players as I wanted to see various parts of our players’ game. Some of them were relatively new to the team but our players were able to show their brand of football.”

The Nadeshiko Japan played France again in a 90-minute training match on Sunday at the same venue. Japan won 5-1.
Forward Karina Maruyama struck twice with Shinobu Ohno, Mami Yamaguchi and Asano Nagasato scoring once each.

    Team (Aug. 1 friendly):
Japan—Ayumi Kaihori (Nozomi Yamago, 69), Nayuha Toyoda (Yuki Miyazaki, 72), Aya Sameshima (Megumi Kamionobe, ht), Azusa Iwashimizu, Yukari Kinga, Shinobu Ohno, Rumi Utsugi, Yuki Nagasato (Maiko Nasu, 59), Nahomi Kawasumi (Asano Nagasato, 75), Kozue Ando (Karina Maruyama, 75), Ayako Kitamoto (Mami Yamaguchi, ht). Coach (interim), Satoshi Mochizuki
Goals—Shinobu Ohno (15), Kozue Ando (38), Yukari Kinga (55), Mami Yamaguchi (90+) for Japan

    Iwabuchi again.......... MVP

On the AFC site, coach Sasaki comments - including that the loss of Yuka Kado (Belle) to injury was the team inspiration -

Highlights of the Final - (the same YouTube director also has highlights of some of the earlier games, include the No. Korea and China games) -

Look at the Trophy presentation - consolation for the disappointments of last year.

Excellent quality goals too ! Surely this team will compete in the u-20 World Cup next year.

Re: Official Japanese WOMEN'S NT Thread [R]

How surprising, the AFC ref gave S. Korea a bogus PK when they were down a goal to Japan.
It's always nice to see a Japanese team play well enough to overcome the usual match-fixing.

Does the AFC have a Korean bias ? The tournament was hosted in China.

Here's something new - one of the u-19 winners, Ryoko Takara, since she returned to Japan, she has been hospitalized with swine flu :
    http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_y...w7YF?slug=ap-japan-swineflu&prov=ap&type=lgns

Seems to be recovering though. Scary I bet !

A google shows she is a MF for INAC, dont know if she was a regular player.
