Found this roster at the EPYSA website and did a little google research on the players. Couldn't find much info on some of them (potential misspellings). But most play for Delco (no surprise), and since these are mostly H.S. seniors (Brocker is a college freshman), I've included what info I could find on where they'll be playing next fall. Landers and Chambers played with the national U18s last season. Landers was virtually on his way to Man City at one point but couldn't get a work visa.

    1. CHRIS BASTIDAS - F - FC Delco - Wake Forest*
    2. TOM BIRCH - M - Super Nova - Rutgers
    3. JOE BROCKER - D - Philadelphia FC - Temple (Fr)
    4. DAVID BROWN - M - Hockessin Blizzard - Northwestern*
    5. JEFF CHAMBERS - M - FC Delco - Penn State
    6. ZACH COLLINS - G - FC Delco
    7. CONNOR CURRAN-HAYS - F - Super Nova - Providence
    8. ROBERT DAVIS - M - FC Delco - Wake Forest*
    9. JOHN JASZCZYSZYN
    10. KIERAN KEELAN - F
    11. DEVON KLIPP
    12. JASON LANDERS - GK- FC Delco
    13. WLLL NICHOLAS - D - FC Delco - Northwestern*
    14. JASON PELLETIER - F - Super Nova - Rutgers
    15. JONATHAN SCHMID - F - FC Delco
    16. GEORGE SEVERINI - F - FC Delco
    17. JOE VERDI - D - FC Delco
    18. CHRIS WITTIG - D - FC Delco

Although it's not 100% clear from the USYSA web page, last year they were held at Russell Creek Park in Plano, and I have no reason to suspect a change. You can find directions to it from this link:

    http://www.swfarmer.com/

Games will be played on Fields C and D, per the official schedule at:

    http://www.usyouthsoccer.org/downloads/GamesSchedule2003.pdf

It'd be great if somebody from BS can make it and report on the games! (I won't be able to make the trip from Vermont).

Thanks for the info. The same link also has all the results from the Region IV regional championship, which took place just last month. Seems to me these teams ought to have a definite advantage over teams that had their championships way back last summer. Ah, to live in a warm-weather climate.

I'll be watching the girls looking for a prospective wife :)

The girls are already dominant at the world level, and in due time the attention will come their way at the youth level. Obviously we're needing higher level training for the men.

if there are kind souls who want to cover girls competitions I will happily publish such reports. When we covered the SC Del Sol event we ran the girls results as well.

If someone wants to cover women's collegiate soccer and recruiting,we can accomodate them (unless it's wanderer simply trying to find a wife).

Speaking of the articles, there are three new Girls 85 preview articles that have been posted today. More coming for other teams and age groups, I assume:

These are the only games I got to see.*Disclaimer* These are my opinions----look at my favorite teams and you can see what kind of soccer I prefer. Anglophiles probably would have loved the pace of these games........

As soon as I walked in, I noticed the fields. Too narrow, too short. Caters to direct style of play, lots of running and teams with faster players.

    Michigan vs. Florida--87s
Whoever developed the players for Florida's team derserves some credit. Out of all the games I saw, they had by far the most skilled players, including the vaunted Cal South 85s. They had lots of Hispanics on their team, but even the few white guys had skills. Michigan came out playing to pressure, and against the run of play scored a goal on a counter. Not one player from Michigan stood out to me--they were big, some were fast in a straight line, and that's it. Florida dominated possession, at times built their attacks from the back, and were much more advanced with combinations, 1-2s, etc. Out of all the games I saw, they were the only team to vary it's attack---occasionally they were direct with long balls, sometimes up the center with good combination play, and other times they would have some good combinations that led to them attacking from the wings. Many of their players were small. Anyway, the game ended up 2-1 (Florida won) in OT because they had trouble at times with the final ball. I would have put possession at 55-45 conservatively, 60-40 would not have been unreasonable.

    Eastern Penn vs. NC 85s.
Honestly, I only watched about half of this game. Perhaps I'm a bit snobbish but I can only watch so much soccer where the midfield is bypassed on a constant basis. No player on either team really seemed too comfortable attacking through the center---all the attacking was either through the wings and crossing or on a quick counterattack with a long ball over the top. Anyways Eastern Penn ended up winning 1-0. Their #10 was pretty good, and the wingers on the NC team were pretty decent. I see the skilled players and sometimes think--"Hey, if he had more teammates on his level, they could really do some damage."

    Cal South vs. Illinois

Erik Ortega was impressive at times, but Illinois did not want to play an open game and preferred the counter. So I'm really not sure if they are capable of stringing passes together and building the attack or what. Illinois seemed to be quite tactically sound at defending. Ortega could probably play in the PDL. No, scratch that, SHOULD play in the PDL.

Cal South---suprisingly, no one totally shined. I was expecting a much more sophisticated style from them since their 87s were rumored to be quite good. They were very direct, and had more athletic players on the whole than Illinois. I left with five minutes left and Cal South up 2-1. Their first goal was pretty good, a cross from the left that a forward in the box chested down to an onrushing player who buried it right corner. Their second goal was a bad backpass by an Illinois defender that the Cal South attacker tapped home. I liked how their left back snuck into the attack, and that's about it.

The only team that I saw play 1-2 combinations and really try to possess the ball was Floridas' 87s. Their skill in tight spaces set them apart from all the other teams I watched.

Other positives: The first touches on the whole were pretty good. Basic attacking tactics were good. The girls have good technical skills and are at times more sophisticated than the boys.

Negatives:Lack of shape exhibited by the teams. Maybe this was lack of time together but I was appalled at times. Passing under pressure lacked accuracy on the whole. Very little creative play or feel for the game(besides Florida 87s). Run and run and run some more style. Little holding or possessing of the ball.

I guess the short and narrow fields have the youth coaches playing direct and fast as hell. I have no idea why they can't embrace MLS style of play, seems to me it would prepare players a lot better for the future. I mean these games(minus Florida 87) were played at an EPL pace, no patience, and definitely not something that we see at the national team level.

And for those yearning for more size out of our youth prospects---keep dreaming, there were very few kids close to 6', even among the U18s. Another reason why IMHO that we need to concentrate so very much on skill development and less on direct play......

I talked to a lot of nice people: parents, ODP coaches(I held my views back FYI), and a couple other youth coaches.

I'm going to go on Sunday--I want to see Florida 87s play again and see if the Cal South 87s have somewhat of a different style than the other teams as rumored.

Thanks for the report, wanderer, although I was kind of depressed after reading your reviews ...

So here are the final pairings in each division:

'85 Boys - Cal South vs Eastern Pa
'85 Girls - New Jersey vs Illinois

'87 Boys - Cal South vs Florida
'87 - Cal South vs Maryland

The '85 NJ Girls were the only team to break Cal South's semifinal sweep with a goal in the 89th minute to win 2-1.

All semifinal results are available at www.usysa.org

85 NJ girls had one very fast player that had an above average skill set. She was able to get loose quite frequently and put Cal South on their heels.

When I go back on Sunday I'm going to see if I can pick up some sort of player list.....upon first glance I saw none available, but I'll talk to one of the coaches and see if I can get one.
