NYCFC signs former Railhawks Goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald http://www.nycfc.com/post/2014/12/11/new-york-city-fc-sign-akira-fitzgerald
I'm a little confused as to why they would trade Sal Zizzo permanently to NYRB for a 1 season loan of Meara and then not have Meara be the starting GK.. Maybe my impression of Zizzo is too high, but I would have thought he'd been a serviceable starter for NYCFC.
The Meara deal is very weird. Zizzo is permanent. But Meara is just a loan with no mention of a buy clause. I know they want as many New Yorkers as possible. But it just seems like it would have been easier to have just picked up MacMath in the draft
Definitely a weird trade. My guess NYCFC thinks by the time the loan is up, they can either force a trade or realize that Meara isn't the one for them. MacMath was making $120k but NYCFC could have renegotiated it. Meara is only making $65k.
He played half a season or so for the Red Bulls. I thought he was one of the top keepers in the league during that stretch. Better than many and with more upside. Great coming off his line, reminded me of Howard in that sense. Good shot-stopper as well. He needed to work on crosses but most MLS keepers aren't the best at that. They don't have to be, Guzan was a top keeper in the league and his work on crosses was not very good. But that is where a goalie can improve the most with experience.
