The stadium was built in 1931[3] and holds 47,290. The architect is Pier Luigi Nervi[3](known for the Nervi Hall in the Vatican) and it is one of the most relevant examples of 20th-century architecture in the city. The stadium is built entirely of reinforced concrete with a 70 meter (230 ft) tower that bears the stadium's flagstaff. The tower is called the "Tower of Marathon". Around the base of the tower, spiral ramps lead from the ground floor to the upper edge of the grandstand.[3] It hosted some of the matches of the 1934 World Cup, as well as football preliminaries for the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.[4] In 1945, it hosted the Spaghetti Bowlbetween American service teams. The stadium was originally called the "Comunale" but was renamed after the formerFIGC president, Artemio Franchi in 1991. The stadium itself underwent renovations for the 1990 FIFA World Cup[3] which included removing the running track and increasing the seating capacity. The official record attendance is 58,271 from 1984-11-25, at a Serie A match betweenFiorentina and Internazionale.
Use to walk by it every day when I lived in Florence. Nice little stadium. People complained because a lot of money was spent to renovate it for only 3 games at Italia 1990 WC but then they also like the fact that it was fairly new, at least 10 years ago. Florentine's are kind of aloof to say the least.

I've said it before, but the Artemio Franchi has a unique design and feeling to, it's not generic, it's like, the beauty of Florence. I mean imagine it, we win the Champions League in the Artemio Franchi, isn't that something we all want to see. Though I agree that the south and north stands are too far away
Do you know what is going on with the newer city.university that was being developed by the Agnelli's on the way and near the Florence Peretola Airport? When I left in 2005, it was just in the early construction stages.
