This thread is started 100 days prior to the commencement of the London Olympics, with the purpose of covering the games with special emphasis in the participation of Guatemalan sportspeople. I intend to provide background information on each competitor, as well as updates on their expectations leading up and during the events. Following an outstanding participation at the 2011 Pan American Games, where a level of success unprecedented in those games was attained, the COG and millions of Guatemalans hope for the representation to achieve great results and perhaps obtain the first ever Olympic Medal for the country. So far the country's qualified participants are: Jean Pierre Brol - Foso Olímpico - Tiro con Armas de Caza Sergio Sánchez - Pistola Libre 50 mts - Tiro Deportivo Erick Barrondo - Marcha 20 Km - Atletismo Jamy Franco - Marcha 20 Km - Atletismo Mirna Ortiz - Marcha 20 Km - Atletismo Jaime Quiyuch - Marcha 50 Km - Atletismo Mayra Carolina Herrera - Marcha 20 km - Atletismo Elizabeth Zamora - <49 kg - Taekwondo Ana Sofía Gómez - Gimnasia Andrei Gheorghe - Pentatlón Moderno - Pentatlón Moderno Juan Ignacio Maegli - Clase Laser Estándar - Navegación a Vela Manuel Rodas - Ruta - Ciclismo de ruta How does everyone think they will fare at the Games?

Re: [NSR] Guatemala at the XXX Summer Olympic Games, London 2012 - the quest for the first ever meda so we have never won any kind of medal on the Olympics? I don't know if that is true!!
Re: [NSR] Guatemala at the XXX Summer Olympic Games, London 2012 - the quest for the first ever meda As the games approach, you will hear it over and over. Guatemala has never won any Olympic medals. Equestrian competitor Oswaldo Méndez Herbruger finished 4th in the individual mixed jumping event in the 1980 games (http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/summer/1980/EQU/mixed-jumping-individual.html) and boxer Carlos Motta Taracena was eliminated in quarterfinals in the light-flyweight division four years later, when a win would have secured bronze for him (http://www.sports-reference.com/olympics/athletes/mo/carlos-motta-1.html). Those two performances are generally considered the closest Guatemala has been to an Olympic medal.
Re: [NSR] Guatemala at the XXX Summer Olympic Games, London 2012 - the quest for the first ever meda This is sad, =( did you know how the other countries in the area are doing?

Re: [NSR] Guatemala at the XXX Summer Olympic Games, London 2012 - the quest for the first ever meda J.P. Brol is definitely one of the top prospects for a medal this time around.

Re: [NSR] Guatemala at the XXX Summer Olympic Games, London 2012 - the quest for the first ever meda Neither him or Alfredo Arévalo have made the "A" time (2:15) required for qualification to the Marathon. They have until July 8 to obtain it. Last Sunday, García recorded 2:26:53 at Milan and Arévalo DNF at Rotterdam. The latter will try again at Düsseldorf on April 29.

Re: [NSR] Guatemala at the XXX Summer Olympic Games, London 2012 Judo - Darrel Akim Castillo has qualified at heavyweight (+100 kg). He is the 13th qualified competitor from Guatemala for these games and 2nd Guatemalan judoka ever to participate at the Olympics (Jorge Quintanal, 2000).
Kevin Cordón confirmed for London via BWF ranking. 14 competitors qualified so far: Jean Pierre Brol - Foso Olímpico - Tiro con Armas de Caza Sergio Sánchez - Pistola Libre 50 mts - Tiro Deportivo Erick Barrondo - Marcha 20 Km - Atletismo Jamy Franco - Marcha 20 Km - Atletismo Mirna Ortiz - Marcha 20 Km - Atletismo Jaime Quiyuch - Marcha 50 Km - Atletismo Mayra Carolina Herrera - Marcha 20 km - Atletismo Elizabeth Zamora - <49 kg - Taekwondo Ana Sofía Gómez - Gimnasia Andrei Gheorghe - Pentatlón Moderno - Pentatlón Moderno Juan Ignacio Maegli - Clase Laser Estándar - Navegación a Vela Manuel Rodas - Ruta - Ciclismo de ruta Darrel Akim Castillo - >100 kg - Judo Kevin Cordón - Singles - Badminton

Kevin Cordón fell on the first set against Henri Hurskainen (SWE) but then put his game face on to win and advance to the next round (15-21, 21-12, 21-14). Good stuff. Next stop for him, Rajiv Ouseph (GBR) on Tuesday.
