Considering I bought a season ticket to Kingston Stockade FC to fill the impending Crew sized hole in my heart and that they are also in the NPSL, I can only say ******** FC Columbus. (Seriously though, I think it's great. Good on the NPSL and whoever is behind this team in Columbus.)
Oh yay, a 4th tier team - sorry, a "no official designation" tier team... Piss in my face and tell me it's raining.
I don't think anyone is suggesting FC Columbus fill the Crew-shaped hole in your heart. NPSL, while obviously not the zenith of soccering, is a fun league to watch. The kids and I had a blast at Dynamo games last year (shame they won't be around this season). And it's nice to support and promote more local soccer at all levels.
I can't believe I of all people am the first to ask about tailgating possibilities and whether or not the Winking Lizard up the street will be the normal pre- and post-match gathering spot?
While reading through this thread, I was thinking the same thing. Although I'm a big fan of tailgating in parking lots. I think this definitely needs to be a thing.
Winking Lizard is about four blocks away, Four Strings is over a mile away, and, as far as I can tell, only serves beer and cider.
I'm agnostic on this venture, since there's no chance that I'll be driving 2.5 hours to watch an NPSL match. So whatever. This seems to be an upshot of Santos FC in Columbus, and I've always thought that kind of thing is good for the game. Kids turn 18 and there's just nothing. I have long thought it a shame that someone in town didn't start a women's team NWSL currently although I think there's still a USL women's league around. I believe that Columbus would easily turn out 1000 or so fans per game for that. Point being, this isn't a zero sum game. I don't think it takes anything away from the Crew. The more soccer the better for eveeyone is how I see it. I heard that Kinsley was disbarred last week - don't know how one confirms that kind of thing - but if it's true maybe he has time for a Xiggz (Ziggz?) resurrectiom.
Agree. The more soccer the better. I was disappointed we didn't get a NWSL team. Plus, being in Grandview makes it easy and their are lots of options before/after.
Who is Kinsley? If they can make this work, good on them. I hope Columbus supports them and Grandview is a great part of town.
He was the founder and.owner of the areas last professional team prior to the Crew, the Xoggz. In fact, come to think of it, they played concurrently in 1996.
I'll catch a game or two, most likely, if the price is right. But it won't be a passion like the Crew (and before them the Xoggz) were. One point. Isn't that stadium artificial turf and not grass?? It was the last time I was down there, which to be fair is a while ago--when the kid I did Big Brother type stuff with was in junior high (he's now a junior in college). If I'm a college coach, I might not be fond of that surface for my players.
New turf there this past spring, and a lot more to do before and after a game than the Crew can offer.
