So if low expansion fees, yearly dues and expenses are so low, how come NPSL teams seem to go out of business so regularly?
I think because the league costs are just a small part of it. Each team is also a business, and if the owner only knows about soccer and doesn't put enough emphasis on marketing, sponsorships, merchandising and other ways to generate revenue then they won't be successful. I think the low entry cost actually makes people think it's cheap or easy to run a team, and after a year or two, when they haven't built up a solid following, they run out of money and fold. Soccer is booming but you can't just put a team on the field and expect people to come out in droves to support it. It takes a lot of time, money and effort, and many owners don't establish a solid five-year plan to be successful.

NPSL is proud to announce that their third annual Player Showcase will take place on January 7-9, 2017 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. “The goal of this event is to give our young players the opportunity to be recognized and get to the next level, and realize their dreams,” Showcase Committee Chairman Kenny Farrell remarked. “We did not want to inhibit players who may have financial constraints. This is an important commitment from the league to its teams and players, and provides an opportunity for professional coaches, scouts, and agents to experience the talent in the NPSL. We think everyone will be impressed with what they see.” StubHub Center is southern California’s home of world-class competition and training facilities for amateur, Olympic, collegiate and professional athletes. Managed by AEG Facilities, the $150 million, privately financed facility was developed by AEG on a 125-acre site on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). StubHub Center features an 8,000-seat tennis stadium, a 27,167-seat stadium for soccer, football and other athletic competitions and outdoor concerts; a 2,000-seat facility for track & field and a 2,450-seat indoor Velodrome – the VELO Sports Center – for track cycling. “In response to feedback from scouts and coaches, we adjusted the player profile to involve younger players this year,” Farrell continued. “Simply put, the league’s top young talent will be put on display for all to see during three great days at the amazing StubHub Center.” StubHub Center is home to Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy, the five-time MLS Cup Champions. StubHub Center is also home of the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) High Performance Training Center, the national team training headquarters for the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) and EXOS, an international training center for elite and professional athletes. Past showcase participants that have signed professional contracts include Tyler Pasher, Brian Cunningham, Brenden Alfery, Jackson Eskay, and Darvin Ebanks. Sponsors for this year’s showcase include Mitre, Staples, and Kixsports. The showcase will feature players from all of the league’s four regions: Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. This event is exclusive to registered NPSL players from the 2016 season. There is no combine fee and costs are covered completely by the NPSL while the player is at the event. NPSL clubs nominated their top players for consideration to represent their region. Nominations were then reviewed by a committee, which determined the final invite list. Coaches, agents, and scouts that are interested in attending the showcase should register with the league by emailing RSVP@NPSLsoccer.net. All registered coaches, scouts, and agents will receive a comprehensive player information packet in advance and upon check-in. Training sessions will take place on Saturday, January 7th with games taking place on both Sunday, January 8th and Monday, January 9th. The full schedule of events can be found below: Saturday, January 7th 4:30 pm West Region and South Region training sessions 5:45 pm Northeast Region and Midwest Region training sessions Sunday, January 8th 10:00 am Match #1 - West Region vs. South Region 11:40 am Match #2 - Northeast Region vs. Midwest Region 7:00 pm Dinner Event Monday, January 9th 10:00 am - Championship Match 11:40 am - Consolation Match All showcase matches are open to the public with no admission fee.

let me put it this way, no, no, and no. NPSL isn't even the best amateur league (PDL!). NPSL has some good teams at the top, but the talent level falls off greatly below the top 8. PDL has the toughest top-to-bottom league.
The 3rd division is a professional division. USSF does not recognize any other division except 1, 2, and 3.
The NPSL must be making money off their combine because it looks 100% useless. With respect to the athletes who go to try and make their names, who is swinging by the NPSL Combine for more than an hour with the MLS Combine going on?
Any one ever go to the Hank Steinbercher Cup? It's in Cleveland this year and I am considering a trip
