Disagree on that one a bit. I am not his biggest fan but I am starting to see a trend change in his approach. Mou never cared about building or long term success because all the clubs he was at their priority was winning now because they either fell from grace or got big money. At Porto they didn't want to fall back. Same at Inter with Juve and AC Milan being around. Real with Barca and Chelsea because of the money, Abramovich wanted to win now. The predicament at United is different, his parameters were set to be in the top four, build back the squad from Sir Alex and still have the ability to win. You look at his purchases or his players that get involved, they are either 26 or under or 28 and over but ready to contribute now and play and start bar Ashley Young. Mou wants to here in the long term, he is not under pressure like the other clubs he was at, and United wants him to stay long term where as his other clubs didn't. Mourinho's experience at United will be different, I have a feeling he stays here for at least more than 5 years.
I think Matic will be asked to do a lot less on the ball with Ander and Pogba around. I am intrigued to see how we make use of him if a team is pressing. He might be sacrificed in such a situation unless we switch to three at the back.
With all the disappointment of us purchasing him and while he was playing my mind was like imagining Fabinho there instead, I still liked what I saw. He helped the flow of the game, like Johno said release the ball quicker and accurately, and the most impressive thing is when we press high, he is tactically astute enough to get up and read the player correctly. That was against Samp, let's see how the season goes, he looks good though.

I can see him here for 10 year or so then get a like a national team job for Portugal then retire. He won pretty much everything. He still has to do it by building a squad and playing youth, that's his opportunity at the biggest club.
I still can't get my head around why there were some among us who didn't want Matic to come to Old Trafford. 29 is no longer "old" for a midfielder. Matic has vast experience in English football. Matic has helped his sides win trophies. Matic is not a publicity-seeking headcase in any way. I'm not aware of his wage package, but I have no doubt that it's reasonable. His first name of Nemanja. What was there ever not love about Nemanja Matic?
Because we wanted elite or high potential player with a long career ahead. He is not that. Also, having same first name as a legend is not a criteria.
I hope this thread makes us all look like a right couple of dicks at the end of the season. Long way to go though.
I was poking fun at your wording, not your opinion. I also think Jose could stay here longer than any other club, but only if he wins the league in the next two seasons. He tends to get impatient if the team isn't winning right away and implodes. Hopefully he's matured and grown out of that.

Perhaps I should have added an emoticon after the last point to quash any suspicion I was serious about that being a serious criterion. My apologies. Ok, the "long career" criterion is a reasonable one. But what if we get 4 very productive seasons out of Matic, which takes him to 33. Isn't that long enough? In truth, it is. We can't sacrifice the present for the sake of the future. We have on our hands, now, a polished gem midfielder who's won trophies in England and who must surely be on everyone's Top Five (here I go again) holding midfielders on the planet right now. He needs no bedding in to a very tough league or a mentoring period to understand what the manager wants. Sorry, but there was never a serious argument against Matic.

An incredible buy indeed. I was on the Fabinho bandwagon this summer but there is simply no denying the quiet but massive contribution Matic has made to the club since his arrival.
