The Northern Virginia Majestics broke their losing streak with a 4-4 tie with Richmond. There was a fair amount of roster shuffling and they were still missing many players because of VA state cup games (and also didn't have the Ghana players), but they clearly dominated and had many scoring opportunities as described below:

    Majestics Draw Even with Destiny

    June 6, 2004
WOODBRIDGE, VA -The Northern Virginia Majestics came back from an early deficit to tie the Richmond Kickers Destiny 4 - 4 after two sudden death overtime periods failed to yield a goal. Down two goals early, the heroics of Majestic Ashley Banks enabled Northern Virginia to score three goals in a span of four minutes to avoid the loss.

Once again the Majestics found themselves behind early in the match Sunday night, giving up a goal in the fifth minute of play. Destiny player Jennifer Parsons would slot a neat pass to an open Natalie Ewell, who would turn and send the first goal of the night past Majestic goalkeeper Emily Niman. The Richmond side would wait another eleven minutes before poor defensive clear would find the ball at the foot of Richmond forward Jessica Myers. Myers would easily score from the right side, and the Destiny looked in control of the game. Northern Virginia's offense would suddenly awaken, and the Majestics seemed destined themselves to get on the scoreboard. In the 35th minute, a Richmond foul would lead to a Northern Virginia free kick from about forty yards out. Majestic Jen Farina would drive a ball into the Destiny penalty area and find the head of Ashley Banks. Northern Virginia's Banks would crisply power the ball off her head and into the Richmond net for her first goal of the night.

The Majestics offense would not remain satisfied, as the offensive pressure refused to ease. Banks would make her mark again two minutes later on a feed from Melissa McBean. McBean broke free down the left side and find Banks floating inside the Destiny penalty area. The pass would split two Richmond defenders and Banks would blast a rocket of a shot untouched past Richmond goalkeeper Crystal Royall to draw even. In an amazing performance, Banks would again make a mark one minute later, launching a long throw-in that found the head of Majestic McBean. McBean's header would deflect off the goalpost and into the net for the 3-2 advantage in the 38th minute, scoring three goals in the span of four minutes.

The second half featured more attacking play from both sides. In the 65th minute, Northern Virginia substitute Raneika Bean would drop a pass back into the midfield to a waiting Paula Flaherty. Flaherty would calmly settle the ball and place a curling shot past a sprawling Royall for the two-goal lead. The Destiny would then come alive, pressing forward relentlessly and scoring two goals in the 67th and 77th minute to once again even the score at four apiece.

The game would remain a draw after two sudden-death overtime periods that featured several close chances for both teams failed to yield a goal.

"I'm not happy dropping a two goal lead at the end of the match," commented Head Coach Matt Badiee. "But I have to be pleased with the fact we pressed down two goals."

"Hopefully, we learned a few character lessons tonight we can remember the rest of the season," concluded Badiee.

The Majestics return home next Sunday June 13th to face the Bradenton Athletics at Forest Park High School. Match time is set at 6:00 PM.
