It just looks so low rent. Like it was bought off of AliExpress. It doesn't even have a tail. is the missing roof panel of mascots.
Full name Truoc Phang. He's of Cambodian descent. It's not always about poorly reasoned phonetic misdirection. I was in a focus group one time like five years ago where we proposed that the mascot just be Commodore Barry riding a jet ski on the river and shooting t-shirts at fans on the river walk. They literally paid us nothing to shoot the shit for two hours and we still came up with a better idea than this.
As someone who grew up with a very large % of my friends being Vietnamese immigrants, I find this explanation acceptable.
It’s silly but it’s good.. everyone should take the stick out of their ass.. it’s a stupid snake costume with hair and arms for some reason that was designed to appeal to kids.. I’m willing to bet my daughters will love him. This is for kids and crossover promotion.. now the Union can have a presence at silly shit like the Phanatic’s birthday or pop up in a parade or on Channel 6 or something and make the Union more present in the cities consciousness. This picture solidifies things for me.. he blends right in: All of the Philly sports teams’ mascots welcome the @PhilaUnion’s “PHANG” to the gang! @AleBedoya17 also here at the @phillyzoo signing autographs for the kids! @phl17 story tomorrow AM! pic.twitter.com/9fw2sdC3oC— Matt Alba (@MattAlbaMedia) September 10, 2018 This is fine. It’ll be silly to watch at halftime.
Shook Ale's hand, wished him good luck. He signed autographs for everyone in attendance and took a bunch of pics for people.
Not bad, Union brought in most of the crowd...rainy day at the Zoo...our expected attendance for today was LOW. In attendance I'd say was about 250 including Zoo staff. (Yes, I work at the Zoo but not with aminals)
So I started this thread almost 5 years ago. At the time, I was going to the games only with my older son and we were way into the games. Now that I go to the games also with my wife and younger son who enjoy the games but are not diehard fans, I have come around to the ideas of additional marketing ideas to keep them (and non-diehards) interested. I think that they will like the mascot. I actually think it's a pretty good mascot. I like that it says "UNION" and not "BIMBO" or have the Union crest on the chest. That makes it recognizable. The snake idea is good integration (although it looks more like a dragon?). I like puns so "Phang" is a pretty good name and ties in well with the "Phanatic." I like that the costume is fitted which will allow the mascot to kick a ball, etc. Overall, I think it's pretty well done. Those who like Swoop, the Phanatic, etc. will like this as well.
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/10/snakes-grow-legs-evolution/snakes-grow-legs-evolution/ So Phang is either ahead or behind the curve.
Has anyone read the backstory to Phang and why he has arms and legs? https://www.philadelphiaunion.com/post/2018/09/10/story-behind-unions-new-mascot-phang I hope this was actually one of the ideas from the children when they asked for suggestions, and not the intern.
Whatever you want to say about the mascot (I think it's kinda dumb but I'm 25 with no kids), mascot backstories are underrated. ^I typed that before reading the story and wow is this crap when it comes to mascot backstories. Gotta love the ACME product placement. On a separate note... "there were traces of human DNA on those cleats and the lightning created a reaction that gave Phang arms and legs" what current or former Union player's DNA do we think was on that cleat?
It does read like one of the stories my kids would have written at a young age. (I hope I didn't just insult some intern somewhere)
