Well the new can afford it, but is he willing to? As for Andi, he can't afford it and if he did he wouldn't be willing.
Straightforward from here: 1. New mayor Willie Wilson sells off Soldier Field to the McCaskeys as part of his project to bring back Meigs Field. 2. McCaskey family ads giant retractable roof to SF (but keeps the columns of course) 3. McCaskeys buy the Fire, then spend big money on players and marketing 4. Fire become ATLUTD 2.0.
2019 means one year closer to this team potentially being a reality. In fact, there’s probably nothing better than 3 more years of pawnoball to roll out the red carpet for the new team.
Alderman expected to reject 20,000-seat soccer stadium proposal on North Side https://t.co/twwmFGSWmy pic.twitter.com/c7IGLCnVMy— Chicago Breaking News (@ChicagoBreaking) January 7, 2019
Killed. Dead. Like so many other pipe dreams. https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/h...ccer-stadium-and-live-entertainment-district/ Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) on Tuesday put the kibosh on two major elements of Sterling Bay’s massive Lincoln Yards development: a 20,000-seat soccer stadium and a live entertainment district controlled by LiveNation with large music venues. In a move that’s expected to be wildly popular with his park-starved constituents, Hopkins demanded that the site earmarked for a stadium that would have been home to a team owned by the billionaire owner of the Cubs be “re-purposed as open and recreational space.”
Good, this way soccer can continue to be a non entity in the Chicago sports landscape. Makes me wonder if there will ever be a team in Chicago again?
Traffic, bullshit. It's only what 17-20 days out of the year. I believe the money it would bring in the area would off set his traffic concern.
I disagree. It would be much more than that, considering it is for soccer and the "entertainment" district. It sounds like that would be used much more frequently. I think the traffic would be just awful. The problem, as I see it, is that there would be no relief from congestion, that is, no where for people to go to avoid the congestion.
I think a perfect spot for a soccer stadium for a USL team would be at the southwest corner of McCormick and Oakton in Skokie. The yellow line runs right behind the property, most of which appears to be vacant and next to the Skokie Sports Park. Build a Yellow line station behind the stadium. You can park at the Skokie Swift stations at Dempster and Oakton, along with a number of companies that are along McCormick. The demographics in the area are solid middle/upper middle class and very diverse. Everyone with access to the Red and Purple lines can easily get to the game to reduce vehicle traffic significantly. It does get a little stinky in the area in the summer due to the water treatment facility but that probably makes the land more affordable too. Make it happen, Cap'n!
Much like Bridgeview, but the stink is often from the play on the field (due primarily from the coaching and playing players out of position).
