Don't worry, if we sell Dier to United for 40 million (one of the crazier rumours I've seen), they will be able to make it affordable...
Spurs now have permission to delay the Wembley decision until the end of April. Typical Levy, nothing is ever straightforward with this guy. Still think there is some bizarre twist with this story.
https://twitter.com/SpursOfficial We can confirm that, following a Board meeting today, we’ve taken the decision to activate our option with Wembley National Stadium Limited. We’ll play all our home games at @WembleyStadium for the 2017/18 season whilst we complete the construction of our new stadium development. 41 replies 306 retweets 274 likes
This will be the cornerstone of the new stadium. If Tottenham doesn't economically improve, then Spurs will look bad. But in Tottenham do economically improve, an not in the gentrification way, Spurs will be models throughout Europe, and probably beyond.
I know it's wishful thinking with Daniel Levy, but I would love it if the club would not sell naming rights to the new ground. So in my fantasy world, I would name it the Bill Nicholson Stadium (I can already hear the English commentators referring to the ground as the Billy Nich', it does have a nice ring to it!). I believe that would be a fitting tribute - if Tottenham are what they are today, it is because of what the Yorkshireman started in the 60s. And it would be a fitting tribute to a manager who doesn't get the same recognition in England accorded to the likes of Shankly, Paisley, Busby, Revie and Clough. What do you lot think?
I would love for the ground not to be 'sponsor named'; but there is 0% chance of that. Levy has made it clear from the outset that naming rights would be a significant part of the overall financing of the project. as to the respect that Bill Nick gets, Shankly, Paisley, and Busby simply won more and bigger prizes. Clough is always going to be viewed as something special, not so much for the number of his trophies (significant though it is) as for the size of the clubs he won them with - Leagues with Derby and Forest, and two European Cups with the latter is really extraordinary. As one who finds Ferguson's European trophy with Aberdeen more impressive than his two CL wins at United, I have to admit that this resonates with me. as to Revie, I think the only folks who rate him higher than Nicholson are in and around Leeds. I'd guess that they get roughly equal respect from neutrals - and in Revie's case, it's a far more grudging respect, as no one (again, save Leeds) liked his teams or the way they played. At any rate, I'm in total agreement that paying significant tribute to Bill Nick is absolutely warranted at the new ground - even if it can't extent to the name. the rumor for yonks has been that there will be a statue of him in the pose of that iconic photo where he's standing by the gates. And we know that those gates were carefully removed before demolition ... so I'm guessing/hoping that this will come to be, and in a highly prominent position, as well.
I actually get the feeling that there will be notable points named for club legends, like Nicholson and Jennings, probably players like Gazza, Hoddle, Lineker, Ossie, Greaves, etc.
i saw the big hole in the Paxton Road end last night, and it's at least twice as big now. It's interesting how they're leaving the roof-supporting truss up whilst tearing out the stand, itself, from beneath it. in all my time of going to the Lane, I never once sat in the Paxton Road end.
@SpursOfficial Asked my dad @apage_captain to fly over and take a photo of the stadium works. Coming alone nicely #coys pic.twitter.com/pQvk30kIhJ— Paul Page (@paulpage84) June 8, 2017 From Paul Page on twitter
