A new series from Armando Ianucci, (creator and writer of 'The Thick Of It' and 'In The Loop'), and Simon Blackwell, starts on 22nd April 2012.

A comedy, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, nominally concerned with the VP of the USA and their lack of a clear purpose or role but essentially about the way politics works in real life, (as opposed to the way most people THINK it works).

Hopefully it will retain the same level of 'attack' their earlier work did although, tbh, I doubt they'll be able to recreate another Malcolm Tucker because, let's face it, there can only be ONE of those ;)

An idea of the man at work, (based on the political machinations in the UK government before the start of the Iraq war),

In The Loop is a great movie. The trailers are funny. Tony Hale is always great. I'm definitely watching.

Been reading the new yorker piece about Ianucci.

    http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/03/26/120326fa_fact_parker?currentPage=all

It looks like some of the writing might have been altered so the VP doesn't appear quite as clueless and powerless as some of the government ministers did in 'The Thick Of It' but maybe that just makes it more realistic for an American setting. A cabinet style government operates in a fundamentally different way to a presidential system so maybe there's no direct equivalent in US politics to a minor cabinet minister who's pretty low down in the food chain, tbh.

    Should be good anyway :)
There's someone from 'In The Loop' in it as well.

Anna Chlumsky... she was very good in the film.

I saw two guys in suits on motorcycles emblazoned with the HBO logo on their helmets and on their bikes escorting an HBO bus with the Veep logo on it driving down 3rd Street SW today, crossing over Independence Ave

That was odd. And oh so DC ;)

The Thick of It's biggest strength is just how strong the cast is, it may be the best ensemble I've seen (Parks and Recreation's cast comes close). Lets hope Veep's cast comes close.

Was always more partial to Jamie, NM.

The angriest man in Scotland y'mean... and that's some horse race let me tell yer :D

The Steve Fleming character, (based on Mandy Mandelson), was also good.

He was awesome. I always thought that the show was going to skip a beat when Chris Langham was replaced, but Rebecca Front was outstanding in her role.

I can't wait for the new series, Ianucci has all the material he needs with the coalition government. He's going to absolutely rip the Lib-Dems.

Hope so but the tories won't get off scot free either.

That was actually one of the things that I liked about TTOI... that it was made clear it was about politics in general, not just about the Labour party, even the 'nooo labah' version.

I think that US politics is similar in the respect that presentation has rather overtaken policy because they're trying to appeal to the same narrow sectors in the swing states, (or constituencies over here).

Oh definitely not, but I thought Ianucci voted Lib-Dem at one point, and has been endlessly disappointed by them lately.

Thats definitely one of my favorite parts, they never say Labour or Tory, its always the government or the opposition.

    More clips!

Yeah he voted lib/dem, imagining, rather naively IMO, that they would be different for some unfathomable reason.

I don't see it will be possible to hide the level of simple bat-shit craziness of the current tea-party inspired reeps from the story in quite the same way they disguised any differences, (such as they are), from the UK tory/tory-lite situation.

OK! Just one last clips from TTOI, (otherwise we'll have an entire thread with no almost no clips of the show the thread's actually about).

This one's a good example of how politicians, (Nicola, the minister in charge of the fictional DOSAC dept. in this example), is put in her place by the Machiavellian Malcolm Tucker.

Saw something similar here in Manhattan: 2 motorbikes, a Chevy Suburban, and the massive HBO bus. They were heading east on 23rd st, saw them between 7th and 6th avenues.

I've spent many hours piecing together as much of The Thick of It as I can from YouTube.

Truly one of the best things I've ever seen on the telly (he said, adopting the native slang).

The best thing about this type of show, when it's done properly, (which hopefully this will be), is that it mirrors, so perfectly, what happens in the real world.

To wit, today's BBC news headlines...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17765535

Abu Qatada appeal: May stands by deadline

The home secretary has insisted radical cleric Abu Qatada's deportation case has "no right" to be referred to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

In a statement to the Commons, Theresa May told MPs the three-month deadline for an appeal passed before the application was submitted.

But lawyers for the preacher, who faces bomb plotting charges in Jordan, and the ECHR said the deadline was later.

As it happens, I was watching this bit from TTOI on youtube last night.

Crime figures or appeal deadline... same thing :D

I think the entire season is up on there in pieces, including the two Christmas specials.

Veep getting good reviews so far, can't wait until Sunday.

Also, Reid Scott looks distractingly similar to Giuseppi Rossi.

Yeah, that was pretty good. Of course, as with ALL comedy, you don't know how it will work out in the long run but the first episode was interesting.

Felt like it was lacking something. A sense of urgency perhaps? The plot felt like it meandered along a bit, would have liked something a bit more punchy. Still, looks promising.
