While he is an extreme case, the problem is the US hands out ambessadorships as reward for patronage instead of using its professional diplomatic class. My understanding was that these people are largely figureheads and the professionals do the real work. I will check on this next time i speak to some diplomatic mates. Every country has different systems.
This has been a problem in America since the founding of the republic. It's exacerbated by the fact that today's Republicans are stupid ipso facto, so the people who fill these roles are both utterly unqualified and colossally dumb.
Completely true. The FSOs implement all of the state department/executive policy. Ambassadors are reduced essentially to figureheads. Other than their personal secretary, they very rarely even make hiring decisions at the staff level. They exist to host parties and functions and offer a bit of gravitas as a "rich" or "socially important" person.
According to Jolyon QC, the plan is for Bojo to close down Parliament again after 5 days so it can't stop no deal Why the Government is desperate to continue the prorogation of Parliament, even if it loses. THREAD.— Jo Maugham (@JolyonMaugham) September 21, 2019
Oh well....It was fun watching Jeremy Corbyn perfecting the sabotage of Labour this week end. SMH....
He is awful. What really calls him into question is that as a populist, he really isn't popular - and especially he did not kick on from the success in 2017 despite Tory disarray. He can't even command his own party. It's all very well to say he is sabotaged by the Tory press, but this is the case for every labour leader. Blair's crew were savvy media operators in the sunrise of the spin era. Smarter than the Tories, they pitched and won the support of the Murdoch media. Helen Clarke in NZ was also a surprising savvy operator who hired NZ's top TV trainers until she mastered the format. A key strength of hers was demolishing her opponents on TV Jacinda is the first true multi-channel operator. Her social media ops is amazing. Corbyn is just crap at pretty much everything since 2017 and this time he can't rely on that energised base that led to record membership
Meanwhile Boris was public bunging ££ to his side piece Bunging public funds to mistresses is something Berlusconi used to do. We're basically becoming Italy but with worse food https://t.co/XYUOlSaLfr— Pawel Swidlicki (@pswidlicki) September 23, 2019
Call me naive, but I don't see how Johnson's position is tenable. This shouldn't just be a resigning matter, it should be a case of never being allowed to hold public office again.
And there it is.. the Supreme Court call the break of the parliament a violation of the democratic principles of the UK, _unanimously_. What a big blow for the clown and for the "genius" Cummings
The court has also revoked the proroguing of Parliament. I honestly didn't see them going that far, especially unanimously.
As we speak, copies of the Daily Mail are spontaneously combusting in newsagents up and down the country.
This is why they are just not good at their jobs Running the country is not the same as running propaganda on facebook
So Bo Jo may have to resign. Good thing, there is a competent Opposition Leader ready to take the lead. Oh wait........
Everyone take a second to consider that eleven unarmed elderly women and men have just told the leader of their country's armed forces to stop doing what he wants, and he is going to listen to them. We take democracy for granted sometimes, but this is truly impressive.
Agreed - this is truly awesome. I am biased as a lawyer, but I have always rated the judiciary far higher than the legislature or the executive on this stuff.
This woman deserves respect.......She has been fearless. Crowds chant Gina Miller's name outside the court. "We are a nation governed by the rule of law," she says. pic.twitter.com/lYOPVINpzN— Ian Dunt (@IanDunt) September 24, 2019
Leave.EU having a twitter meltdown. Not sure why, as we were told that prorogation had nothing to do with Brexit.
Is there any speculation as to why the English high court was so out of step with the Supreme Court and the Scottish high court?
Under english precedent the exercise of prerogative is not justiciable But the supreme court just clarified the matter and essentially validated the Scottish approach So the English high court just followed established principles but is now over ruled This is why Scotland was chosen as a venue as the law had developed differently there
