BBVA will host a July 11 doubleheader in Group A, group stage of the Gold Cup 2017. No knockout round matches. Draw hasn't been held but US will be in group B so we won't see them (again, which is getting old, but I guess our duty is to attend the sh*t out of whatever understaffed camp cupcake Canada game we get if we want to move up in that world). Mexico is Group C so no dice there either.
It's actually a World Beach soccer qualifier on the beautiful sandy pitch of BBVA Compass Stadium. We'll get El Salvador and/or Honduras in Houston, Canetti gets a few nice bottles of wine, the FO gets another excuse as to why the field sucks ("well, the Gold Cup tore it up because it was a doubleheader and Bubba the grass cutter couldn't properly treat it between games")
that's racist. check your privilege. your colonialism is showing. don't appropriate your fascist landscaping imperialism on me. you are an ableist to negative stereotypes. i think i hit most of the buzz words so you should feel fully shamed PS somehow what you did is rape but i couldn't figure out how to contextualize. but trust me, you raped! #safespace #trigger warning
Are folks really excited about a Gold Cup doubleheader with no Mexico or USA? Don't we have this every Gold Cup now? BOOM. #GoldCup yesterday; new player today. Can't wait for what tomorrow brings... https://t.co/TR4k5p8Rhj— Zac Emmons (@Zac_Emmons) December 20, 2016
I preferred when we had games at Reliant, indoors. Not only is it cooler and more comfortable but we seemed to get better teams and knockout matches.
I remember the Gold cup doubleheader in Houston two years ago was pretty entertaining. Spirited matches and a couple of extra time goals to win and tie the matches to make it very interesting going into the third set of matches in the group stage. We will see what teams are in group B and hopefully maybe a rivalry match is included.
The Central American direct qualifiers for the Gold Cup are set. Current qualified teams USA Mexico Canada Honduras Panama El Salvador Costa Rica Curacao Martinique French Guiana Jamaica The only slot left is the UNCAF-CFU playoff: Nicaragua v. Haiti
If today is a sign of what we have to offer, then I would not waste money this NAT team either. Typical Bruce Arena BS from before he lost his spot at USMNT coach. From the roster choice to the style of play. Un-entertaining and predictable in its most textbook form. If you "really want to fix" this team today's game was no shining example of hope. All I saw was the usual Bruce Arena back in the day waiting for counter attacks, offering no real attacking up front, and his usual list of people that he favors. Lleget, Sasha, Pontius,... are you ********ing kidding me?!?!? I know its one game, and the international schedule wont help you, but you played a young team at home on jet lag and many of whom had no real experience on the pitch as a starter with this Serb national team and you damn near lost a few times.
Terrible soccer, but the skilled European based players were not in camp, so the out of shape MLS players had to show what they had. Not really much to see I think.
I was a little disappointed it was a 0-0 slog, but taking it as a Camp Cupcake, I think what mattered was the people who stood out as either good or bad. Nagbe showed he should maybe start in the CM and Zusi proved an interesting RB. Rimando also probably made a case for being on the quali roster ahead of Horvath or Yarbrough. Other hand, Garza looked awful -- and Arena praised his replacement -- and Bradley was struggling to stay with the play. You can make fun of Lletget but Arena seems to be grooming him for the sort of spot Beckerman had been playing. He started Jones but then made a point at halftime of saying Jones is out and we need to get someone ready to play his spot, Lletget. My question there is whether he is more Armas-grunt or has the ball skills of Jones, Beckerman, and Bradley. Sacha IMO is a touch player out of his depth at the international level. He did things against Cuba but so did Wondo once upon a time. You have to be careful sometimes to not draw too big of conclusions from isolated games against poor teams. I also think a subtle thing missed in it being 0-0 was the opposing 0, which has not been typical for years. The offense needs work -- but will be supplemented by better players from abroad. But a big part of our problem has been a constant drip of GA and getting it back where we pitch shutouts is important. I am also going to be interested if some Germans are left off the March roster. After tap dancing around it, Twellman rattled off a list of Brooks, F. Johnson, Chandler, and someone else. I am curious who makes the roster/dress list/lineup from that set.
Nicaragua beat Haiti last night, 3-0, to win the series, 4-3. So that completes the field. Group A Honduras Costa Rica French Guiana Canada Group B USA Panama Martinique Nicaragua Group C Mexico El Salvador Curacao Jamaica The Group stage starts on July 7.
Cubo Torres just got called up for Mexico's Gold Cup roster. Good for him to work his way back to NT contention.
My apologies. It's not official yet, but supposedly it was a leaked preliminary list. I guess it's a positive that he's even in contention.
