I bet they would likely just not show the games on ANY platform. Not online, not on tv, nowhere. And that would be worse for fans of those teams.
Huh? It's a bit hard to imagine them doing this. NBC spent about $1BB on EPL broadcast rights through 21-22. And I suspect conventional TV is still their most important platform, and revenue stream. So I don't think they're killing that old TV platform any time soon. They're just trying to get the balance right between old & new technologies.
I think Homie was referring to the lower profile Gold matches, not the ones that end up on NBCSN/CNBC/NBC. Comcast/NBC has already killed the Extra Time channels and I don't believe they're going back to more cable/sat channels, logistics and spending. But, particularly with NBC, streaming tech and reliability needs to improve to satisfy customers.
Yeah......you'd have to imagine that NBC gets a large portion of their revenue and viewership from the top games which is why the lower tier teams were relegated to Gold to begin with. That might be the next step to just do away with those games which would stink. Tho who knows.....it probably doesn't cost them much to put those games online.
Ahh. Sorry I missed that. And explains what seemed to be such an extreme statement from Homie. And I agree with your last sentence 100%. The quality & reliability of streaming has to equal if not exceed that of conventional cable TV distribution... especially if they're going to continue to charge a $4/mo upcharge for Gold streaming.

Thanks for sharing that LB. I found Arlo's cheat sheet very interesting (after zooming it). Probably pretty old school. Not sure I've ever seen a PBP's notes like this before.
English commentators love their hand written games notes: The @BBCLondonSport commentary position at Wembley... Wow! Meticulous preparation. Men after my own heart. Whilst I can quite easily spot which player has the ball, on the 3 teams I support, I've always marveled at the PBP guys who can do this for any random team they happen to be covering that weekend. And in England it could be one of 40+ teams. I've always assumed that there wasn't much "winging it" involved... that there was professional & serious prep before a match... studying & cramming. And these beautiful matchday cheat sheets back up that assumption.
To the north. Newcastle bound. At least they did not move it to the Gold App. Wish I could get coverage from England over Satellite....
Ugh. I could sort of understand when F1 pushed EPL aside on NBC's schedule. But Rugby????? That makes zero sense to me. We shall see.
I guess, it would make sense if you want to promote a new product and draw people to it to put it on NBCSN. Those who want to watch EPL should easily be able to navigate to CNBC. I don't believe there are many who go to CNBC on weekends for them to draw people to rugby.
These sports don't really change anyone's access to the Premier League when they're on, in fact more Americans get CNBC than NBCSN. Just makes PL viewers flip the channel a few mornings. And it looks like some of the 6 Nations will be Gold only, while maybe bigger matches (like England-France or Wales-Ireland) will be featured on NBCSN. And I think they'll do fairly well, maybe 200-400k viewers. 6 Nations is top level stuff that resonates even with an American based audience. I'm glad it's breaking out of PPV/BBC America/beIN restricted access.
IIRC, when F1 took up time on NBCSN, that not only bumped EPL matches to other channels like CNBC, but it also sometimes caused related programming like GoalZone/Post-match coverage to be left off of TV entirely, sometimes moved to online. And there might've been other EPL-side-effects from F1 as well. I can see your logic of how NBC might like to drum up viewership for a "new" sport like Rugby (which hopefully they bought for a song). But for EPL junkies like me, it's just not a plus. Basically, anything they do to restructure their EPL programming, which ends up moving content off of NBCSN or causing less content to be on traditional TV channels altogether, I'm just not going to like that. Sorry rugby fans.
