Rugby? is that a joke or an attempt at? I wonder what the hell her story could be? "Pia and I didn't get along?" end of story. I personally always enjoy watching her play. she was a very exciting athlete and fballer
Pretty sure it wasn't a joke as Kai played in 2011 and in the Fall was even named to the US Women's 7s. I recently looked but she is not on any roster. Here's an article from Nov. 2011 which talks about it: http://www.soccer365.com/news/u_s__news/u_s__national_team/6593/kai_turns_attention_to_rugby
She didn't want to play. The Spirit drafted her in the supplemental draft, so some people were speculating she'd make a comeback, but she never showed up.
here's a photo from July 2014. i'm not sure if it's in cal or hawaii but she seems to still be around soccer.
And we have another Tasha Kai sighting: In prep for UCLA we got a visit from a very accomplished alum! Thanks Natasha Kai for your support!… http://t.co/v7ItkmlL4b— Hawaii Soccer (@HawaiiWSoccer) September 4, 2014
So it's safe to say Tasha Kai unofficially retired right a while back right? She never made a big announcement saying "see ya later guys, I'm out! peace!" Or will she make a secret comeback out of nowhere? Has Lindsay Tarpley officially retired?
Okay, it's safe to say a lot of national team players fall under the radar as far as "retirement" goes. Probably moreso with the men but with the women, I feel like I know them better. More on that in another thread....
Mediocre forward, more flash than talent.... but great entertainment and gave white bread USWNT some attitude.
Seems as a bit of a slight to call her mediocre. Her strike rate for every pro team she played on, is better than mediocre.
Yes but "not great" <> "mediocre". When Kai played pro, I kinda saw her as someone like Beverly Yanez who for me is in the top echelon of forwards on the club seen and just one step away from the national team. Whether she can ever reclaimed that level is left to be seen
I may be misreading/understanding you. But Kai did make it to the NT, and scored 24 times in 67 appearances, which isn't too shabby. Not sure what her minutes breakdown is though....
Yeah I know that but I was speaking about today's NT. No offense to Kai but when she made the NT, it was overflowing with the amount of offensive talents we have today.
Y'know, though, this is a thing that really itches in reading/hearing the offhand responses of fans since the era of talk radio began; an excellent player does not become "mediocre" because someone else is better. Duke Snider wasn't mediocre because he played centerfield in the same town as Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle. Kai's problems were never in producing on the field; they were in staying on the field and (I think) somewhat in maintaining a constructive relationship with team and staff. One was never really sure that her ample competitive fire was not slopping over and blistering the people she was theoretically cooperating with; and if you started her in a game you really had to hold back a sub against the possibility/likelihood that she wouldn't be able to finish.
I liked Kai, but my memory of her is being used as a 2nd half sub in friendlies for the USWNT, she'd score a goal on the tired legs of the opposition -- very much like Syd LeRoux. She also was good with Sky Blue. And then one day, she disappeared. I used to wonder what happened to her... now I don't. Hope she's having a good life.
While I can't speak too much on Kai, and her numbers seem to be mixed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natasha_Kai Leroux while Morgan was out injured continued scoring even while starting for whole 90's.
I crunched some numbers. You're correct on the whole: she scored 11 of her 24 WNT goals in the second half of the second half, generally as a sub. But on the rare occasions when she was given a start, she scored 7 goals in the first half and 8 in the second, so there's some indication she could score anytime given the chance.
