Not sure why the Bay Area can’t have more than one professional soccer team. Lots of players and families in the East, North, South Bay and SF as well! I also still believe an MLS team in Sac would do quite well.
Lack of fan interest and/or adequate facilities is one reason on why soccer fails in SF and Oakland. Just look back to the beginning of this thread and you will see why the (Stompers 40 years ago and ) Deltas were one and done.
It can. But most efforts so far have been seriously flawed in one way or another or in a dozen ways. Also lower division sports is a tough sell in the bay area, this isn't Fresno or Louisville. On the other hand, if some tech billionaire somehow found a way to build a stadium in SF, I don't see why an MLS team couldn't succeed there. Local rivalries only make MLS better. Hopefully Sacramento eventually gets in because right now San Jose is well on the way to being the mostly-irrelevant third wheel in California.
Pro soccer is coming to Oakland. #OaklandFirstAlways pic.twitter.com/9aLHuGeBD0— Oakland Roots (@oaklandrootssc) October 29, 2018
Their website claims they will start playing in Spring 2019, but has no league information yet... https://oaklandrootssc.com/
Article: https://blog.sfgate.com/soccer/2018...s-up-goal-short-stompers-advance-us-open-cup/ The logo features an oak tree with multi-colored roots representing the multi-cultural mix of Oakland. Cut out of the tree is the image of the city as it looks on a map. “Our crest embodies our club spirit and deep-rooted love for Oakland,” the team added. It was designed by Matthew Wolff who also created the Los Angeles Football Club’s crest and the 2018 World Cup jersey for the Nigeria Football Federation which sold out within minutes of going on sale.
I'll root for the Roots. As long as they don't play Root one soccer. I wonder if they will have a Root Beer Float Night? Roto-Rooter for a shirt sponsor?
Will The Roots fly cross-country to play the home opener's halftime show? GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
FOUNDERS CUP NEWS ELEVEN FOUNDING MEMBERS TO LAUNCH A NEW LEAGUE IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE NATIONAL PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE NOVEMBER 15, 2018 Clubs to Compete for Inaugural Founders Cup from August through November 2019; Full Schedule Planned For 2020 The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) today announced that an established group of 11 clubs stretching across the United States have launched a new league in association with the NPSL. The clubs will compete in the first-ever NPSL Founders Cup competition that will run from August to November 2019. That competition will lead to a full league schedule in the spring to fall of 2020. These clubs will be making a full-time commitment to their markets and will include professional players, coaches, and staff. ... The 11 founding members include ASC San Diego, Cal FC, California United Strikers FC, Chattanooga FC, Detroit City FC, FC Arizona, Miami FC, Miami United FC, Milwaukee Torrent, New York Cosmos, and Oakland Roots, and plans are being developed to add additional clubs.
So is this like the NPSL have a D1 of their own and the rest of the current NPSL becoming their D2 ? ? If the NASL is dead and NISA never gets off the ground, and if NPSL adds a 3rd level (just for kicks maybe like the current UPSL), is this the organization that will attempt to challenge the USL/MLS structure ?
I was confused by this announcement from the Oakland Roots. I know they played some Open Cup game(s) recently. So does this mean they were competing in USOC without being part of a league beforehand? Or does this mean they’ve switched leagues, or what? Hard for me to understand all these new league acronyms
How can you "know" something that is completely false and not based on reality? Can you name a single player on the Oakland Roots who played in those recent Open Cup games? That would be really impressive, given they don't have a single player on their roster yet. How are they playing games without any players? I guess actual soccer players are not needed as long as those games take place entirely in your imagination... ONCE AGAIN, spending literally five seconds on Google could clear that up for you. But hey just spread misinformation instead, that's the American way.
Sounds like NPSL is creating their own USL 2 level competitor. Independent of the as yet to play NISA or the defunct NASL 2.0.
ASL, USA /NPSL1, NASL 1, MISL ,AISA, USL1, WSA, WSL, ASL2, SWISL, SISL, SOSL,USISL, APSL, A-League, CISL, MISL 2, NPSL2, NPSL3 &4 , USL Pro , D3, PDL, NISA, NASL 2 , MLS... Then of course the CCS and NCAA which never fold...
