actually, we want to be the opposite of today's billionaire old boy network of pro sports. It could be funded like Amway, I.e. A pyramid scheme.
I forget what the team name was, and I remember going to Keezar for the last team that played there for the NASL. A totally miserable experience.
If L1A had won the bid rather than MLS, then would Avaya Stadium have been built next to Westfield Valley Fair / Santana Row, Westfield Oakridge, Eastridge or one of the South Bay's other malls? GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Yeah since his "soccer" league wouldn't have actually been soccer... kinda glad it's consigned to boxes in his attic.
It would have been too congested down there. I'm sure if it were put to a vote, residents and/or parents will definitely have complained about the noise levels before 9PM....
It's already too congested on the east side without the stadium but they are still planning to build on that huge empty lot across Eastridge four baseball fields. I was hoping they had a couple soccer fields but I don't see any on the map as i bike by.
One, maybe two, years and done. The Victory were an abject failure with the owner wanting to fold mid-season disallowed by the league. Sure, the demographics of San Francisco have changed since 2007. However, I don't think the newcomers, chasing the tech get rich dream, are going to be a fan base. They are working too much and then doing who knows what staring into their mobile screens. For all its supposed tech savvy, the Deltas are a mess. The website is a disaster. There is no telephone number. I sent an email a few weeks back about their alleged match with the Quakes. "Is there one in addition to the closed door scrimmage in San Jose? At Kezar?" Unanswered. High ticket prices, relatively inaccessible and cold stadium. Minor league team in a major league town with weakening (often bandwagon) sports fans.
I had a great time with the 1906 supporters group for the California Victory games I attended late in the year (2007), including one against the Seattle Sounders, featuring Sebastian LeToux. The best feature about Kezar is the pub by the same name right across the street, where you can party with the home team afterward.
I'm going to give them two years. Their owners aren't quite as discombobulated as the California Victory's were (since they don't have a La Liga team in freefall). But they're going to lose money, far more than they planned to, find that there's no way out of Kezar, and realize it was a big mistake. That's assuming NASL doesn't lose D2 sanctioning this coming fall to speed things along. Been saying it since the beginning, a team in SF needs to be top tier and needs to have a well located top notch venue. Like the Giants and soon Warriors both have on the waterfront closer to the wealthier young urbanites right on or close to major transit lines and the limited freeways in SF. Renting a small, cold, city owned stadium in a corner of Golden Gate Park has always been, and will remain a recipe for disaster for a minor league team. It's not Cow Palace bad, but it's damned close. But at least they can drown their sorrows at the Kezar Pub across the street as they await the end.
During the USSF negations, the Deltas inquired about playing in the USL. Even if the NASL eventually fails and if they do want to continue, they still have the other league to fall back on.
Different league, same team problems. About the only thing USL MIGHT give them is an affiliation chance with the Quakes. But even then I'm not sure how keen San Franciscans would be to follow a minor league side of a San Jose team. It didn't work on the hockey side of things with the Bulls (a Sharks minor league team) folding mid season their second season.
SF sports fans don't give a rats ass about 2nd or 3rd tier sports of any kind. The Deltas will get the same 500 soccer diehards that went to Kezar to support the Seals and all the other local A league/USL iterations. Just a fun tax write off for the owners... Can we bomb this whole thread from our board.
I think you are right about the tax write offs.....when those end unless the club does well, so will the club.
