I don't understand why you americans don't like your original and historical names and want to call soccer teams City, F.C., or stuff like that which in the Usa are just an imitation of Europe...
first of all it seems that most fans are voting for Chicago Sting, second the name is linked to a golden age in which the Sting won two soccer bowls and a transtatlantic cup (stealing soccer bowl and transatlantic cup '81 to the Cosmos)
Maybe because their target audience wasn't alive when the Chicago Sting last played a game? The target audience is 18-35 year olds...... The target audience wasn't alive during the so called "golden age" of The NASL. They didn't grow up watching those teams play. Those brands don't resonate with Milennials. It's one of the reasons the Cosmos reboot hasn't been a runaway success. 5 years of greatness back in the late 70's and early 80's isn't going to make the current generations swoon over brands/teams that haven't been around for nearly 40 years........
Very true. But it also comes down to just how goofy some of the names chosen were. I mean "Sockers" or "Sting"? These are not even good American style names. One is a really goofy play on words and the other has nothing to do with Chicago or even the team itself. At least names like Padres, Fire, White Sox had something to do with the city or team itself. And something super regional like "California Surf" is just bad no matter the history or sport. It tells you nothing about the team and rather than getting more people to identify with them, it gets less because they don't actually represent anyone (particularly in a big state like California that already has 3 MLS teams, 3 USL teams and soon 3 NASL teams, nevermind dozens of PDL and NPSL teams) It's not that we don't value our naming convention. It's just that the old NASL names were too long ago and in most cases too stupid to continue to use. And in the absence of any kind of consensus on what makes a good alternate name people fall back on the most basic thing they can, City/Region FC/SC.
I appreciate history as much as the next guy and I would like to see the old team names live again even if it is in NPSL. A Chicago Sting, Minnesota Kicks, St Louis Stars, Memphis Rogues, Fall River Marksmen etc at that level would be cool to see. I don't think the Chicago NASL team would be well served by using the Sting name, but it would be awesome to see the Sting Trust guys start the Sting back up in NPSL. For the NASL team, I think an identity around the City is necessary.
But beer is for all of San Diego But that could work...or maybe North County 76'ers (for the state HWY).
If you're going beer highway, North County 78ers would be better. The breweries are all on Hwy 78. And it links the two ends of North County that Wilt is looking at Oceanside/Carlsbad and Escondido.
Hey 76ers would work too. Or Aces if you want to go the casino route (which a bunch of them are right off 76 in Pala and Valley Center.)
Prime examples of the danger of present day pop culture to name anything. Never even heard of that movie until you posted that photo. And I doubt I'm alone among those under 40. And mind you I say that as a fan of both Redford and Newman's works I have seen.
I'm no moviephile "if that's a word" but I at least recognize movies that won Oscars for best picture from a good period before I was born.
Couldn't tell you who won best picture this year never mind 45 years ago. I stopped paying attention to the Oscars almost as soon as I found out they existed because I never agree with their choices as to what is the "best" picture in any given year.
I said I was a fan of their works I've seen such as Butch Cassidy, All The President's Men, The Natural, Out of Africa, Road to Perdition. Big difference. You may consider The Sting one of their best movies, but I'd never heard of it until this thread, nor am I necessarily a "fan" of them as artists to the point I'd hunt down their other works. Frankly I am a "fan" of Newman more for his work with auto racing.
history can't be deleted and with good marketing millenials will love those brands, Cosmos did not work because Sela Sport did not really put much efforts into it
I don't agree and never will, but please if you don't want to use the old names (which to me is like cursing in a church) at least please no ********in names like Chicago City or San Diego F,C. San Diego Conquistadores could be ok but it's in spanish so it would be too much ethnic
How would San Diego Conquistadors be "too ethnic"? You realize San Diego's only D1 pro team is named the San Diego Padres right? Or that the city has had a San Diego Conquistadors basketball team previously? Neither was "too ethnic" either. Hell come to think of it you realize the name "San Diego" is Spanish too right? No offense, but I get the feeling you don't really have any clue about California at the very least. As for history not being able to be deleted, sure it can. History is written by whomever is writing it. The Galaxy have done just fine not being named Los Angeles Aztecs. FC Dallas has done fine not being named "Tornados". Philly has done great not being named "Atoms". I could go on but you get the point. The old names are not the only way to go. In many cases they've come up with much better names like Union or Fire in Chicago.
Union is terrible name, about old names not always are a good idea, Atoms would have been much better but it was abandoned when pro soccer came back to Philly because of Three Miles nuclear incident. Fury would have been much better but they weren't such a great team and lasted a few years so it wouldn't have been suitable, and I can go on....
