Russian Premier League's winter break is from Mid December to Early March (2.5 months) and their summer break is from mid June to mid July (1 month). Given how harsh Russian winters are, those Early/Mid December matches must suck.
Well they only changed when they bought, er... won, the 2018 World Cup hosting rights. I wouldn't be shocked to see them switch back to a summer schedule prior to the winter 2022 WC in Qatar and stay that way.
Maybe? I'm certainly not going to say it wasn't driven by the WC bid, but the primary reason I saw was that it was driven by the top teams who, at the time, were flush with Russian oil money and felt that they weren't able to attract top players. There was the feeling that if they were to switch to align with the top leagues, they would be more competitive in the summer transfer window and, as a result, in CCL. Unfortunately, the price of oil nose dived almost immediately after they made the change, Putin started to strong arm his European neighbors, etc, and this seriously impacted the teams' ability to attract top players, so no idea if it is working or not.
What is going to happen to the players until August? Cosmos have said they will be paying them I think until the end of this month but carrying the front office, sales, marketing etc as well as players to August while having them do nothing ......
What do players have to do with anything? We're talking important stuff here, like International Calendars. Have some perspective.
From what I understand, lower division players that are on multi-year contracts are relatively rare. If this is the case, most NASL players are either out of contract, or rapidly approaching the end of their contract.
Reuters Russian game left in the cold after calendar switch Dmitriy Rogovitskiy 6 MIN READ MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Russian Premier League has suffered from falling attendances since changing its calendar six years ago as freezing conditions and a lack of indoor stadiums make life uncomfortable for fans and players. The winter break therefore cannot come soon enough for a league which goes into hibernation for three months on Dec. 5 with temperatures having plummeted below zero. There have been calls for a return to the ‘spring-autumn’ system that was jettisoned in 2010 from the current ‘autumn-spring’ arrangement but not from Russian Football Union (RFU) honorary president Vyacheslav Koloskov. “This would be laughed at around the world,” the former RFU chief, who wants clubs’ infrastructure and facilities to be upgraded, said in a telephone interview. “The new system is more progressive than ‘spring-autumn’ as it is adapted to the European and world standards. However, it does have its faults,” he told Reuters. {MOD EDIT: Excerpt only please - read the full article via the link}
There is also a high supply of pro-players; yeah, it's not ideal to build a cohesive team with little notice; but it is easy to pay a bunch of journeymen to show up
Or the Cosmos will play host to Miami the first 9 games the play the next 18 in Miami, including the Boxing Day clash. The final 9 in New York. At the end of the 'proper' 38 game season for a 2 team league both teams will simultaneously be relegated for finishing in the bottom 3 of the table and promoted for finishing in the top 2.
PRFC F/O keeping everyone in the dark. The stadium was damaged by the hurricane. Honestly, I care less about the likelihood that they won’t play. What annoys me is that the players and staff have no idea what the future holds -no communication from ownership. It’s unacceptable given what folks on the island going thru— Nipun Chopra, PhD (@NipunChopra7) January 9, 2018 Per @PRFootballClub spokesperson (regarding future of the team):“So far we have not been told anything about the future. So far operations continue as normal”#NASL @SocTakes— Nipun Chopra, PhD (@NipunChopra7) January 9, 2018
So if the stadium is still damaged that should be a big red flag that they’re not going to be playing...
Not that there's going to be a 2018 season, but I've gone ahead and started a new thread for 2018. Huzzah!
But are they in good condition? Besides, there's WAY too many things to worry about in Puerto RIco besides a minor league soccer club owned by a vanity project.
Well Long Island and Manhattan are islands in the Atlantic Ocean. They could petition to be in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean_Club_Championship
So is Britain. They should join UEFA. Weren't there posters stating that the Cosmos were a SuperClub?
Not that bad an idea,Toronto's rugby team played in the English third division last season and won it. I may have mentioned that elsewhere.
