I've never liked the name Gold Cup for our confederations championship for the simple reason it is used by other sports and you don't really think soccer when you hear gold cup. Here in california a lot of people associate the gold cup with a horse race that happens every year. a google search of gold cup doesn't even bring up the soccer gold up until the 4th item on the page. The first is another horse race - the Virginia Gold Cup. The first page of the search also brings up a bowling tournament called the gold cup and a fencing tournament with gold up is on the secoind page. OK you get my point; Gold cup doesn't = soccer. Not that any name change will happen but if you were to rename the gold cup what would you name it? all I could come up with was CONCACAF Nations Cup
Before reaching conclusions you should try a search of Copa Oro also. Keep in mind that the percentage of people interested in the CONCACAF Gold Cup whose first language is Spanish is higher than for the horse racing and bowling competitions. If you know of any popular Spanish language search engines you could search for Copa Oro there.
right but I'm thinking of a name that would be better for American audiences. My mexican friends don't even speak spanish.
I am fine with the name surprisingly. There is tradition to it and there are really no better options. Now the Actual (literal) Gold Cup has to change in my mind. That trophy is hideous to me.
The Copa de America. Since with the exception of 1993 and 2003, it has always been hosted by America.
