Hey MLS, don't you know late season matches have no drama without the threat of relegation? Hey MLS, don't you know teams and players face no consequences without the threat of relegation? The Vancouver Lens Flares?! Edit: D****t, Jason!

I've never thought relegation and playoffs were mutually exclusive (the English Championship, Liga MX, and the Jupiler League in Belgium, for instance, have both), but either way, we're in a better place with regard to playoff races than ever before. They are now, I think, a decent proxy for whether a team had a good season depending on what their budget is. And budgets are part of the reason--since some of the big spenders can buy themselves a better shot at the playoffs, not making those playoffs for a team like Seattle or Toronto is a bigger failure. Meanwhile, between the big-spending ability of some of the rivals, and a lower ratio of teams admitted, it means that making the playoffs for a team like Columbus is a more valid accomplishment than it would have been in say 2010. I also think that while the seeding/format of the playoffs could stand to juice the races more, it's better than it once was. Nowadays, a team that can play for a bye should do so, and failing that, it makes a significant difference if you host a playoff game. Supposing all the teams had the same underlying quality and the goal aggregate series have zero home field advantage, while the single elims give about a 70% shot to the higher seed (decent suppositions given what we've seen of them so far), the long run playoff odds to make the Cup Final by seed would look something like this: 1: 25% 2: 25% 3: 17.5% 4: 17.5% 5: 7.5% 6: 7.5% This is a better scenario than when 4 out of 7 teams were qualifying and they all had roughly the same odds of winning.
Somewhat significant to MLS, Paul Allen passed away today. Can any of the Sounders people give us an idea what, if any, impact this could have on your club.
The short answer is “Maybe no impact”. The long answer is that Paul Allen was a very silent owner with the Sounders. He had roughly 20% ownership, but gave no money when cash was needed, but still got a split of the profits. His ownership paid for the use of First and Goal’s business side during the setup of the Sounders and the first few years, but the Sounders had split off conpletely a few years ago. A lot will depend on what happens with his share of the team. Will his heirs keep it and continue to be silent owners, will the expect a 20% say in how the team is run, or will they cash out and sell their share..
Wouldn't the bigger issue be what happens to the Seahawks and the management of the stadium, and how that could affect the Sounders in future lease negotiations and other cooperative efforts?
This hit me more than I would have expected. Thinking about it I realized that as a Seattleite, a Washington grad, and a QA engineer, he had maybe more effect on my life than anybody else I've never met (outside of politicians). He will be missed.
The Sounders signed a lease through 2028 that covers a lot of that. There’s also speculation that the Seahawks will be looking for a new stadium by then, which wouldn’t be in Seattle.. There’s also been a lot of the chilling in the relationship between the Sounders and Seahawks that would happen with andifferent owner.
I just read that the Seahawks have a 30-year lease with an option to renew for another 30 years. That would come due in 2032. It's sad if a building like that can't last for more than 30 years. Would the Seahawks want to go to the suburbs? Of course all that would depend on who will be running the Seahawks at that time.
I think the Seahawks runs out in 2028, not 2032. Atleast, that is the reason I saw in a few articles as to why the Sounders lease ended at that time. Construction for the CLink start in 1998 and I think that is when the lease was signed. As for why the Seahawks would want to leave.. to add more seats. They’ve sold out pretty much every game held at CenturyLink since it was built and they can’t really add more seats without a major remodel, which they won’t get any help from the City on that. They should be able to get help from one of the suburbs.
Just read that Allen's sister is his heir and she's stated she's not interested in owning the teams. So assume that sometime in the next few years the Seahawks, Trailblazers, and Allen's share of the Sounders will be sold.
Jody is a Vice Chair at First & Goal and, allegedly, is a Seahawks fan. Other reports say she’ll likely sell the Trailblazers and retain the Seahawks. It is worth noting that Paul was a huge basketball fan and very hands on with running the team. However, he was the complete opposite with the Seahawks. He bought the Seahawks out of a sense of civic duty and was very hands off with the team. https://www.seattletimes.com/sports...ar-what-happens-next-with-seahawks-ownership/
Marshawn Lynch thanked two people/groups when he left Seattle. One was the fans, the other was Paul Allen.
A nugget of information from a few years ago separate from the Sounders, but Merritt Paulson's name was attached to a rumor about Paul Allen selling the Blazers in 2012. I'm linking an article that does not give Canzano any clicks. https://www.nbcsports.com/northwest...mors-and-speculation-about-sale-trail-blazers
Yeah, when we talk about who "owns" a stadium, you should not be thinking about an apartment renter and their landlord. Sports teams are far more empowered than that. Sometimes the government "ownership" is not much more than a legal fiction aimed at not paying property tax, but even where that isn't the case, the main anchor tenant is going to have a lot of say on what else goes on at the venue.
More like an apartment complex run by one of those apartment management companies. Whichever legal entity owns the complex may not be clear but for all intents and purposes the management company is the owner from the perspective of the tenant.
