Watching GetUp! this morning, co-host (stand-In) Ryan Russillo is wearing an LAFC T-Shirt very prominently. Which is pretty cool. Though he did have LAFC gear on display when he had a Radio Show that was simulcast on ESPN in the afternoons.
Talking With Kort Ford Part 1 https://www.burgundywave.com/2018/8...1-youth-development-in-the-us-colorado-rapids Some very interesting comments form Rapids HG Kort Ford about the value of the college system and how TAM is hurting the young American player. Anyone interested in youth development should read this just to see what the opinion of somebody who's gone/going through the system is, even if you disagree.
Nothing "controversial" about it. The ball was out of bounds and he kicked the other player's legs out from under him. Straight red, and deserved.
Well...USL Clubs need players too! So much of this feels anecdotal to me. How many players are going over seas relative to the number working their way through MLS academies? Are there not record numbers of MLS Academy players breaking through to the first team? Yes, TAM is allowing MLS clubs to import better players. Isn't that what we want? Maybe College soccer needs to do a better job of of preparing players to be full professionals. It ain't 1996 anymore. The league doesn't need a bunch of warm bodies....
The thing that has always bothered me about the current system is how most homegrown players give up any chance of a college scholarship when they sign with a MLS club right out of high school. Dallas now has signed 23 homegrowns and a number of them have played in the first team but what happens to the ones that don't make the cut? Does anybody have figures on how many homegrowns succeed? It seems like it would be a lot better to play a year or so in college and then go GA.
If he can't control himself any more than that...I hope he never suits up for the USMNT again. He was one of the few losers I hoped would still play for USMNT. Plays like that make me change my mind.
I don't know if TAM is hurting the young American player anymore than the college game. I only sampled 3 programs. The Indiana University men's program has all domestic players. The UVA men's squad has 9 foreign student players. (Wake Forest has 4).
This also shows that not even the players understand MLS' roster rules. At the end of the day whether a player is a normal roster player, a TAM player, or a DP............that money is coming out of the owner's pockets. This isn't to say that some owners pay more out of pocket for players than others do. The harsh reality is that the talent bar has been raised, and will continue to be raised each season in MLS. Domestic players will need to rise along with this bar in order to continue to play in the league. One needs to only look at the rosters of USL teams................they are littered with former MLS starters. Pro sports is a cut throat business and career. That's the cold hard truth. It's not for the faint of heart. Playing time is not handed out like Candy on Halloween!!! Playing has to be EARNED.
I don't know if there's a strict rule or not but I know a number of the Rapids HG signings have included 'GA-like' funds to go to college after their playing career (or during it if they want to).
MLS has an agreement with Southern New Hampshire University until 2018 for college. http://college.usatoday.com/2015/08...h-university-to-provide-education-to-players/
I always wondered why I would see their ads on MLS highlight videos. First I thought because they are semi-local and me being in New England, but it is a league-wide program. It could be worse. There is another college, New Hampshire Institute of Technology, who had a big sign on one of the highways. Theyhad 2 different coors of flat, slate stones spelling out the letters "NHIT" Well, you just know that someone is going to get drunk on the first Saturday night of the school year and rearrange the stones in the N to make it into an S... Last time I drove by there, they had replaced it with a wooden sign where you'd need a circular saw to do the same kind of damage....
