They can go on and win the title. Which team cannot? Even PSG can go on and win it without hardly scoring any goal.
Monaco beat Lyon 2-0 at home to go 3 pts. clear. I heard their was around 4,000 people at the game. That's just plain awful for a game versus a big time opponent. I know they don't average lot but when a top team comes in they should be able to get more.
If there are first now "WITHOUT A SOUL" there seems to be quite a lot of clubs in the same situation (just take a look at the ranking and see the difference of points between the 1st and the 5th club !!). Saying that Monaco is an awful club without a soul is really stupid. Why don't you clearly say: "I don't like Monaco" ! It would be clear enough for eveybody. The problem of the club is the lack of supporters but when you're surrounded by OM,Nice,Cannes,...with a much older history in french football what can you expect ?? I agree with Bouba Diop: Monaco is bringing an exciting football !! BTW: can you even see them on dutch TV ??????
We used to be able to see them. Not anymore. A club that big without any real fanbase is a club without a soul, yes. The fanbase is the soul of the club. Do you disagree?
For you with how many supporters would you start a fan base to get a "soul" ? 10000,15000 ??? I support a club in 2nd division that has 1500 real fans and the average attendance at the stadium is 1800.The city has +/- 2500 inhabitants and believe me this club has a SOUL !! I also want to remind you that Monaco is one of the smallest country of Europe with Vatican and is close to the biggest club of south France: Marseille so if you're a young kid living in that area I can imagine that you would first support Marseille. To get more reactions to your post why don't you go to the web site of the club and ask what they think about that ? Regarding so-called Monaco "awful football" the debate is closed as you cannot see them anymore on TV (so how can you have this opinion ????à.
Monaco is good for the French League because they spend the $$$. France needs as many big clubs as they can get. I don't care if they don't have a soul or whatever I hope they don't go play in Italy which they wanted to do a few years ago. I do't expect them to have a large fanbase but I think they should be getting better attendence than they do. Plus as stated already they always play an attractive brand of soccer. Monaco=good.
Am I talking Chinese or what? I didn't make any statements about their football. I'm just saying that a BIG club like that (not the 2nd division team someone mentioned here) with a beatifull and reasonably big stadium but with empty stands doesn't really come to life in my opinion. So that's why I said... without a soul. PS. How many people are there in Monaco?
ACFA, there are about 30,000 people in Monaco, this year they are averaging i guess about 8,000 spectators/game.
Hmm... reasonable. But my point remains kind o the same. BTW where do Monaco get their money? Thye are quite wealthy aren't they?
Even with all their wealth they never have won a major European competition. They lost the 1992 Cup Winners Cup final to Werder Bremen. Closest they came.
Here's a quote from a book I have about soccer. "Prince Rainier of Monaco's money took the club to the first division in 1953. Since then the Grimaldi family's subventions have been augmented by a FF50 million subsidy from Monaco's national council." It was Prince Rainier way back then so I'm guessing Prince Albert is in charge now.
Heres a list of players Monaco had in 1999: Fabien Barthez/ Man u Philippe Christanval/ Barca Martin Djetou / Parma Rafael Marquez Philippe Léonard Willy Sagnol / Bayern Munich Marcelo Gallardo Ludovic Giuly Sabri Lamouchi / Parma Sylvain Legwinski Jon Arne Riise / Liverpool David Trézéguet / Juve Thierry Henry / Arsenal that's pretty scary.
All that talent but they still coudn't come close to Winning the European or Uefa Cup. How far did the '99 team get into Europe, Papa I can't remember.
I am not sure but i know they lost to a Spanish team, i think it was Malaga in the 1/8 finals in UEFA cup.
Man, on paper that's one hell of a team. What is the current vibe in Monaco regarding the departure of Rafa Marquez. He wants to go to the Spanish League, but the club is asking a lot of money for his rights.
Impossible : Malaga is for the first time in UEFA Cup this season, and doing quite good (1/4). I´d say Mallorca but not sure. I remember one of the matches they lost 4-1 there and coudn´t make it to the 1/4.
