CHICAGO – The Montreal Impact and Portland Timbers have been selected to join the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, Tuesday, following an extensive review process. The Impact U18 and U16 teams will join the Academy for the start of the 2012-13 season.

"This is excellent news for the club as this championship groups the best clubs in all of North America and MLS," declared the director of the Impact Academy Philippe Eullaffroy. "This league will be an excellent developmental tool for the U16 and U18 teams, an excellent transition for the U21 level and a source of additional motivation for the U14s. This league will help develop our players so that they may succeed at the pro level

one US league that’s shifting to the international calendar.

On Friday the US Soccer Development Academy, the elite competition for youth players around the country, announced it will be moving to a September-June season beginning with the 2012-2013 campaign, spreading matches across 10 months.

“This is the model that the best countries around the world use for their programs, and I think it makes perfect sense that we do as well,” said US national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann in a US Soccer statement. “The Development Academy 10-month season is the right formula and provides a good balance between training time and playing competitive matches.”

There are 15 MLS academies currently participating in the US Soccer Development Academy program:
Frontier Division: Colorado Rapids, Sporting Kansas City
Great Lakes Division: Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew
Texas Division: FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo
Liberty Division: New York Red Bulls
    Mid-Atlantic Division: D.C. United
    Northeast Division: New England Revolution
Northwest Division: Seattle Sounders, Vancouver 'Caps, San Jose 'Quakes
SoCal Division: Chivas USA, LA Galaxy, RSL Arizona

Toronto is in Canada, and this is the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. Looks like Montreal and Vancouver switched countries when nobody was looking. ;)

Seriously though, TFC U18s play in the CSL, U16s play in CSL Div 2.

    Academy report:
Historic home debuts for Impact U16 and U18

    Impact U16

The Impact U16 side earned its first victory in USSDA, beating FC Bolts Celtic 3-1. David Choinière, Claudio Di Zazzo and Kerry Zhang scored for the home side.

“We are very pleased to have won our first game, following a really good week of training,” explained Impact U16 head coach Jason Di Tullio. “Our objective is to improve each game. By using a good work ethic all season long, we will be successful and develop good players.”

    Impact U18

The Impact U18 (0-0-2) played to a second consecutive 0-0 draw. Goalkeeper Samuel Dufort earned his second shutout in a row.

“This is a new league for us, so we are still learning,” said the Impact U18 head coach Wilfried Nancy. “There is a little bit of frustration in the group as we are still looking for our first goal. We have to be able to differentiate between speed and anticipation. On a positive note, we have not lost a game and have not allowed a goal. We have to continue to work on our finishing and how we develop offensively in the final third.”

The U18 team tied its third consecutive game, a 3-3 draw, scoring its first ever goal in USSDA play. Francis Duceppe scored a brace, while Charles Joly was also on the scoresheet.

The Impact U16 won its second consecutive game of the season, by a 6-0 scoreline, including a hat-trick by Heikel Jarras. Claudio Di Zazzo, Juliano Cobuzzi and Jimmy Sanon also scored in the win, which now puts the team in first place, tied with three other teams.

The Impact U18 suffers first loss

The Impact U18 (0-1-3) lost its first game of the season, falling to the Red Bulls in the first matchup by a 4-1 score, with midfielder Jeremy Gagnon-Laparé scoring the lone goal for the home side. The Impact played the final 10 minutes of the game with a man down as forward Charles Joly was shown a red card.

“The quality of the opponent was high,” said Impact U18 head coach Wilfried Nancy. “It’s the first time that we faced an MLS academy, and we had some difficult moments where we weren’t very efficient with our transition game. But the young players will learn from this and adjust for next game. The level is higher than we are used to, and the competition will be strong every weekend, so we will have to adapt.”

“The Red Bulls are a bigger, stronger and faster competition than we’ve seen so far,” said Joly. “Now that we’ve seen them, we’ll have to adapt and be ready for our next matchup.”

    Impact U16 defeated

The Impact U16 (2-2-0) were defeated by New York 4-0 on Sunday in the second game – for just its second loss this season.

“The reason why we came into this league was to play better competition, and today we probably faced one of the best in the USSDA,” said Impact U16 head coach Jason Di Tullio. “I’m proud of the way the boys competed, despite the result, but now they have seen firsthand how good their competition is. A loss like this is part of the learning process. I saw it in the boys’ eyes that they realized this league is another level, and they are ready to work to get there.”
