But it's still a good question, to which I am not sure of the answer. In Europe, however, most players are on multiyear contracts and giving them a part of the transfer fee is one method used to get the player to *want* to break that contract to sign with a new team or to get him to want to make his old team transfer him.
I would assume the freedom of choosing your club on a free has more advantages versus signing with your club and having them in the way/process of a transfer.
Given MLS's track record for occasionally holding onto talent unless a very high offer comes in, it doesn't benefit the player to sign a new contract.
In Europe, most players are already negotiating their next contract with a new club while on a long term contract with their current team (usually in the last 1.5 years). Not a lot of players go on free transfers as teams do not want to wait.
I think it was Kenny Copper's father that said that MLS forced players to waive thier percentage of the transfer fee, if you don't sign it they kill the transfer.
Ben Jata Retweeted Orlando City SC @OrlandoCitySC 50m50 minutes ago OFFICIAL: Nocerino is coming to The City Beautiful. City signs former AC Milan CDM.
Ceren and Nocerino will be a great partnership (on paper at least). If you add Higuita to that, that's not too shabby. Kaka would have to play wide though. -----Nocerino---Ceren Molino-----Kaka------Rivas? ------------Larin or ----------Higuita Ceren----------Nocerino Molino----Larin----Kaka with Shea and Ramos bombing up the wings.
Shea and Ramos are very good at getting up the field from the backline, but Orlando's wide midfielders are lacking. I think your top lineup is the most likely. Molino was very good last year before destroying his knee, so they really need him to bounce back because Rivas, Rochez, Winter, and Laryea could be messy. That team shouldn't be good enough to make the playoffs, but we'll see. If you really want to have fun, make a NYCFC starting lineup. I can't see any way they're good this season unless they sign some wide players.
I think you still get to choose. Some clubs might not want to pay a transfer fee for you, but transfers are such commonplace, I doubt requiring one is that detrimental (for those going overseas)*. You have to sign with the new team. It's not like being traded whether you like it or not within US sports leagues. *granted, US/MLS players might still be seen as not worth transfer fees
This is something that might get in the way. I guess this was my question/thinking. Trapp's contract is done this year. If he's worried about a transfer fee getting in the way, he probably doesn't sign a new contract with MLS, and he's gone after this season. If a transfer fee isn't a hurdle (and possibly even an incentive, as the player gets a cut), Trapp might sign a new contract during this year, and maybe he's around another year or so.
If Trapp lands a consistent spot on the USMNT for WCQ I think he's gone next year. If he doesn't, he'll be here another 2-3 before he goes, I think. I just don't think MLS, and Crew especially get enough exposure for overseas clubs to be tripping over themselves anytime soon to sign him. Maybe he makes the All-Star and shines against Arsenal and gets noticed, but I don't see regular CSCC league matches drawing attention to him.
I think people are missing the biggest point. He is out of contract after this season. With his Greek passport he will have lots of option.
Where is everyone getting it's Trapp's last year? I looked up the end of the 2014 season roster cuts, and the Dispatch said Trapp's contract was guaranteed for 2015. http://www.dispatch.com/content/blogs/covering-the-crew/2014/11/cuts.html And here it says that 2016 is an option year. http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2015/...xy-montreal-impact-announce-roster-moves-2016 Obviously not all MLS contracts are the same, but I know a lot of them have 2 option years on the end. Trapp has only had 1 option year exercised (2016). Is there only 1 year? I've been googling and I can't find an answer, certainly don't see anything about it being his final year. Could someone point me in the right direction?
I have been looking and asking for the answer but have not found anything concrete. Standard MLS rookie contract is 2+2. I don't know of any HG player who has signed a 5 year contract so it could even have been a 3+1. I asked Patrick Guldan from Massive Report. He suspects this is also his last year. We know he has not signed an extension so unless he got a 5 year contract this would be his last year.
Of course, if he's not getting a consistent spot and the Klinsman has intimated (or outright said) that he needs to go to Europe, that may encourage him to make the jump sooner, rather than later..
No way Trapp is a regular anytime soon. Klinsmann has given him 2 garbage time appearances the last two januarys, that's it.
