And as I said, the winner is guaranteed $1,000,000 from the CWC. So, really, you should make that read Champions League: $1,036,000 (12-14 games) MLS doesn't give anything to the Supporters' Shield winner? They should.
Hahaha, they get a chance at $1,036,000.00 I'm pretty sure the CONCACAF Champions League has a better prize than that. Unless they lowered it from last year.
Fair enough. But I'm guessing the $36,000 for the winner means the runner-up and 3-4 place finishers (who don't get to go to the CWC) have very little to play for.
they should really do away with the superliga and pass on some or all of that prize money to the Champions league..
But the prize money comes from proceeds from attendance and TV Revenue. If you take the competition away, you don't have the money to move. Superliga has a multiple double headers to help lower the costs; plus they've had good attendance.
The Supporters' Shield is barely recognized by MLS. The trophy was paid for and is given out by the supporters' groups. Getting the CCL bid was the first sign that it was considered an official prize.
Wait wait wait wait wait hold the phone. So the CCL winner gets $36k for winning the whole thing? Is there money distributed along the way? Like you get around $500k cumulatively spread out over 12-14 games? Because if not then, lol, useless tourney.
Not useless when the winner gets $1,000,000.00 just for qualifying for the CWC (only hosts and OFC are guaranteed less, while UEFA and CONMEBOL are guaranteed more). If they win the first match in the CWC that number goes up. They can't qualify without winning CONCACAF.
Who is this Glenn Davis guy thats providing this 36,000 number, and why should we beleive him? I'm guessing that UEFA and AFC publish they're info on their websites, concacafr does not, so how are we to prove this 36,000 number?
Glenn Davis is a well-respected soccer journalist. He has called games for ABC and ESPN and is the current color man for Dynamo games; he also writes a column in the Houston Chronicle. He has some credibility even when he doesn't reveal his sources.
So, only the winner of the CCL gets a prize?? nothing nada zilch for all the other teams???? nothing for making it to quarters, semis & final??
They get to host more games which should in theory mean more gate revenue, hot dogs sold, tv money, etc. If a team with a following like Seattle or TFC reached the group stage, that would be 4 more sold-out games. So far, not many MLS teams seem to hype up the event unfortunately. That winter game sell-out in Montreal last year must have netted several hundred thousand bucks for the Impact.
Ahem, ahem... Puerto Rico Islanders 0 (1) - 0 (0) Toronto FC ...so, for anyone keeping score, the USL team just booted its MLS opponent from the tournament, leaving Toronto to suffer the double embarrassment that Montréal still holds the record for the best international performance of a Canadian club, while Puerto Rico Islanders will have to prepare for their first game in the group stage against what (according to the how they qualified) should be the best MLS team in this competition.
LOL bye bye Toronto. MLS teams have only won 2 games out of 30 against non MLS competition in this tournament.
when a league such as the MLS is only 10 years old who cares about the money they should be playing to prove they are a good league. so far the USL is better lmfao
Because they have won have many CONCACAF titles as compared to MLS? Because they have won how many USOC titles as compared to MLS? DCU moves on to the group stay, via PKs... So that's 2 MLS in with a possible third tonight.
Yeah, the USL record vs. MLS teams since 1996 is pretty bad. They have had a few notable victories over the years but the vast majority of the time MLS has come on top. Besides, TFC is canadian and we dont really care about them anyway, as americans Puerto Rico is more american than TFC.
I can't believe that this is a serious debate. LN - Dougg wins the thread. I like the USL, hell I used to follow it when the Silverbacks were active...but until Puerto Rico even comes close to winning CCL and a USL team other than the Rochester Rhinos has a USOC title run, I'm not trying to hear this. Yeah, Puerto Rico won their aggregate, but that's all it was. They were the better team over the span of 2 games. (I actually want to see the Islanders go on another giant killing run.) That does not mean that USL > MLS. I'm pretty sure everybody knows that if the MLS actually made this a priority, they'd do much better. But until then, the argument that the USL is better than MLS is a silly one at best.
Actaully. Columbus and Houston (also the league's two best teams this year) are in already as in now DC...NY can make it 4 for 4 from the MLS (USSF eligable) tongiht.
Check the data. 3 of 29. Not all that different, but you're also being pretty selective in your time frame. Houston has a winning record, unless I miscounted, at 5 wins, 7 ties and 4 losses.
new competition, new history, apparently. thats why such a shit league like mls is gifted four spots.
Actually, the U.S. was probably given four spots at least in part because they were the second most successful country in the old tournament, behind Mexico. Costa Rica was a pretty close third and possibly should have gotten more spots...except that only two Costa Rican teams had any kind of success in the old tournament. This year, Costa Rica did get a third slot, and the team they sent got slaughtered 6-2 at home in their preliminary match. So if the U.S. loses spots, who should they lose them to?
