First draft related trade of the day has already occurred it seems. D.C. United has traded No. 3 overall draft pick to Los Angeles FC for $200,000 worth of allocation money. DCU doesn't have a second-rounder. So quiet draft day unless club acquires a pick. Which seems unlikely given the talent pool. #mls— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) January 19, 2018 Half of that TAM and half GAM.
Maybe. 250k was the price for the third pick last year. Problem with this year's pool is that a lot of the top end talent will end up taking up an international slot so that may be driving down the value this year. Guess we will see as the day goes on.
Good point. I wonder if the international players fall, they'll have to rethink the GA program. On the other hand, if international slots are this tight, it seems like the few americans at the very top of the draft would be very desirable.
The thing about GA players is that I believe that at least one team has to be interested in signing them and they will be forced to use a pick on them if that player is still available when they get to their last pick (whether that is 2nd round or 4th round, I don't know).
Think he started saying club and for some reason thought draft and put them together. Not going to say anything since I've done that speaking before.
Yes, basically. At least one team has to tell MLS that they WILL pick him. Can be, and often is, several teams. (It's done blind so you don't know who has already been tapped). Then, I believe it's the second round pick, the league makes the pick for you. What i've always wondered is how they rank which team gets him if more than one nominated. But it never gets that far. GA's are well paid and off the books (ie don't count against the roster budget and are paid by the league/adidas). Everybody wants them.
Minnesota takes a timeout and apparently now Chicago has taken a timeout. Seems like this draft is a trade fest so far. Chicago trades 75k GAM, 100k TAM, 15th pick, and a player for the 5th pick and selects Jon Bakero. Sort of wonder if the Juan Quintero deal possibly falling through could have drove this trade. Bakero projects as more of a playmaking forward so if they aren't bring in a big CAM (or at least a young CAM) he may see time sooner rather than later.
Lack of can't-miss/surefire picks will do that. Even the best players available are viewed as potential depth.
Minnesota trades up to the 7th pick for 150k in TAM and selects Mason Toye. Guess they are stockpiling attackers there.
